Well this is my first time posting so be nice.

But heres my situation. My car is costing me tons of money, from the repairs to the gas and the insurance its costing me a ton of money to keep besty going. So I've looking into other means of transportation and went with a bike.

Now when I was younger about 16 I rode my bike everywhere from school to work to the trails everywhere. But at the age of 17 I tore everything in my left knee acl, pcl, lcl, and mcl and a nerve making me use my car to get around rather than my bike. But now that a few years have pasted I'm ready to get back on the saddle. I've been looking around and I want a bike that can handle some trails nothing to crazy and be my bike that takes me to school and work and I've been looking at one company in particular Specialized and I would love to get a hardrock.

I tried it out and it fits and feel great but my question is what one?(pro disc, comp disc also note that i do not know much about bike parts) What one would be best for my money, I really don't want to spend 800, way to high. More like 300-500. There are the 08 models on there website that are much cheaper than the 07 models(Pro Disc). Now that gets me confused because I don't know alot about bike parts. The LBS that I went too didnt have any 08 models. So I couldn't try them out(don't know if the 08's are even out yet.)

PS Didnt really know what fourm to put this in so if its in the wrong place, please move it

Read the sticky at the top of the page. Most manufactuirers have equivalent bikes in this price range. If this is your only means of transport as well, you may want to up your budget. You get a decent bike in that price range, but nothing particularly special. If you live in a relatively flat area, I would get a single speed like the Redline Monocog. No suspension or gears means you have little mainteneance to worry about and you can just hop on and ride to work. You may also want to post in the Living Car Free and Commuting forums.

Sounds like you've done some homework riding at least one bike and you've decided on a Hard Rock. Good choice. As for which model, consider that upgrading later usually costs a lot more than buying a higher level new. So I'd recommend getting the best level you can, without overspending your budget. If your LBS doesn't have an 08, how about an 07? Nothing wrong with saving a few $$ if the LBS offers a nice discount. If the 07's are not discounted, move on to another LBS. Hope it works out for you.
Edit: Both of my MTBs that I purchased new, where end of the year bikes on sale.
