Not very well - buy a 7/8spd chain

I use an SRAM PC-48 on my 7-sp. HG and it works great! Shifts very smoothly, silver connector is very convenient, and inexpensive on top of that (less than $10 on ebay)
PC-48 is a 6-7-8 speed chain so yeah that'll work a nine won't however.

i read on harris cyclery that you can make a use 9 speed cassette cogs on a 7 speed cassette hub to make an 8 speed cluster...so...8, 9 speed cogs, on a 7 speed hub. if you do that you can use a 9 speed chain.
got it?

I use a 9 speed Shimano chain on a 7 speed cassette. No skipping or fr der rub. It's for my commuter, so I don't care too much. I wouldn't use it on a nicer bike tho...
I use a CN7701 on an 8 speed on the commuter, it shifts well and last many hard, wet, loaded miles.
Seems to me that the only way is to try it and see since how well it works will probably relate to your whole set up and not just the cassette. Theoretically, the cassettes are designed to shift best with the right chain so it also depends on what you would consider acceptable performance.
I am assuming that the reason why someone would ask this would only be because one already has the chain. If not, why not just buy the wider chain?
