Just got an email from WABA about upcoming meetings to revise the Fairfax County bike route map.
Here's the text. Short notice but I might try to get by the Vienna meeting since it's only 3 miles from here.

Fairfax County Bike Map Meetings

Fairfax County will hold two public meetings to discuss and solicit input on a bicycle map of the county currently being compiled. This is a good opportunity for cyclists to review and comment on the proposed routes and map content. There will be two meetings, a south county meeting on January 29 and a north county meeting on January 30. To see the on-road network, go to:

http://www.fabb-bikes.org/map/FairfaxBikeMap.pdf (Large PDF file, 8MB. Scroll down to see section maps.)

Off road routes are being compiled and include the W&OD Trail, the Fairfax Co Parkway Trail and other major paved trails or connecting trails. A map of those routes will be shown at the meeting.

I'm sorry I missed this. Looking at the map, I feel there are routes included in my area that I personally would not ride, thinking them unsafe-- maybe they are the "safest" in comparison to others, but certainly not "bike friendly". I wonder if the intent of this project is to encourage commuter/recreational use of these routes with the intent of later improvements, or just a PR push to advertise Fairfax as bike friendly when it is not.

I didn't make it either (working late) but I was talking to someone at Saturday's PPTC ride who was there. According to him there was a big turnout, lots of opportunity to talk. We'll see what happens.
I think Fairfax would like to be more bike friendly. I know Gerry Connolly and he is sincere about improving cycling, and I've meet with Linda Smyth and she seems to be supportive. Can't vouch for the other supervisors.
Unfortunately the county's main effort that past few years was completing the Cross County Trail. That left out all the road riders for a while.
