Recumbent - Homemade Seat (how?)

I am trying to build a SWB bent (24"/24"), but i can't seem to get the seat right.

I want a really reclined seat, any tips? I might try to create a seat out of sections of wood (like in the drawing). But right now i have no idea how to attach the sections.

The picture is just a mock up, there will be support arms to hold the seat up.

Maybe there is an easier way to make a seat?

I don't know how to make a custom seat... but it looks to me that is a long distance between the crankarms and seat..

You can make a simple seat by connecting two pieces of plywood with a piano hinge. For a clamp, you start with a piece of pipe with an ID the same as your bike's top tube OD. Then you fabricate something like this.

My concern was that since I am putting quite a bit of weight on my back (with such a reclined position) that a flat piece of wood is going to cause discomfort. This is possibly counteract-able with lots of soft material.

OH, just came up with something. (sketching it up)

Foam from the bed store, i have seen this stuff in some "special" beds. I think it comes with an ergo shape so its all done. If I can get the stiffest one it should do well.

That's the idea! Although if it were me, I'd use flat foam for the base and cut off the corners. That'll make it easier to put your feet down. That seat will be pretty high.

Oh yeah, good stuff. The flat base and cut corners sounds great, can't wait to pick up some ply wood.

Unless you greatly over engineer the seat the cantilevering of the back
will exceed material strengths for most ordinary materials. The vast
majority of bents have some sort of strut from the upper part of the
seat back to a stationary part of the rear triangle. If that is a shock
allowing the rear triangle to pivot up and down, then bracing the seat will
be difficult. A hinged seat will compound the problem.

A search on the Wisil HPV site should give some info on molding seats.
It is not difficult to mold up a fiberglass minimal seat and debug its
shape before doing a final layup. You will need some significant stiffeners
in the design without struts.

Finally, the design is a stretched CLWB, or LWB not SWB.

There will be a support arm from the back of the back-rest to the rear triangle.

I just sent my sketches to the wood shop, they said it will cost 15eu with labor and material. I should have the seat by next week. The seat IMO looks nice, I used rounded ends like those CF seats (and FG).

I still don't have a BB though. I got a bmx bike to chop, but the cranks are really bad and I think its some old BB standard too.

Atm I don't have a seat to fit and test fit, and it is snowing so i can not chop up the bmx and complete the frame, and steering.

Are those O-rings? Just noticed. I might try that, for dampening, but with wood, foam, and a wood support bar, there should be plenty of flex. Even the flimsy frame.

I made a wooden seat a while back using 2 skateboards. If you measure it correctly, the curve of the board fits between the shoulder blades just right.

Yeah the one I am getting cut is like 2 skateboard ends but flat, and wider.
