Deputy uses Taser on fleeing bicyclist

A Glenn County sheriff's deputy shot a man with a Taser gun for allegedly riding his bike at night without proper lighting.

According to a sheriff's spokesman, the bicyclist ignored warnings from the deputy he would use the stun gun, then fled on foot.

One probe struck the bicyclist, Omar Herrada Rivera, 39, but he did not receive a shock.

After being checked out at a hospital, Rivera was held in the county jail on suspicion of resisting arrest, riding a bicycle without proper lighting, riding under the influence of alcohol and using false citizenship government documents.

The sheriff's spokesman said the deputy's decision to use the Taser was proper.

Sounds like the idiot got what he deserved (although unfortunately he didn't receive the shock because the deputy's aim was a bit off). I wish the police around here would actually take the time to stop people riding without lights at night. And of course if you run from a police officer/sheriffs deputy yelling "stop or I'll tase you" it shouldn't be a surprise when the deputy shoots a couple of darts from his taser in your direction.

My question though...if the suspect had the advantage of being on a bike, why would he get off and run on foot? I guess that must have been the alcohol coming into play in the decision making process.

If he fled on foot, they tased a pedestrian, not a cyclist.

I feel kind of bad for that dude, getting tased hurts something fierce. But he shouldn't have run.

I wonder if the force used was in line with the offense the officer was stopping him for.

Yet another dangerous criminal removed from the streets thanks to our boys in blue.

I wonder if the force used was in line with the offense the officer was stopping him for.

Probably more in line with the ofiicer's ability to give chase or not.

Well thats no fun, I could have taken bets on how long he stayed right side up on the bike.
