Fifty Plus (50+) - Cyclist Tasered

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.
Obviously not a sprinter........At least it didn't say he was wearing a 50+ jersey. Would be as humiliating as the 3 UNC football players being assaulted by...........oh better not go there.

HAMILTON CITY, Calif. --A Glenn County sheriff's deputy shot a man with a Taser gun for allegedly riding his bike at night without proper lighting.
According to a sheriff's spokesman, the bicyclist ignored warnings from the deputy he would use the stun gun, then fled on foot.
One probe struck the bicyclist, Omar Herrada Rivera, 39, but he did not receive a shock.
After being checked out at a hospital, Rivera was held in the county jail on suspicion of resisting arrest, riding a bicycle without proper lighting, riding under the influence of alcohol and using false citizenship government documents.
The sheriff's spokesman said the deputy's decision to use the Taser was proper.

Don't TASE me, bro!
They'll hold him for 48 hours, release him, and never see him again....

You are seriously calling this person a cyclist? Too bad he was only hit by one probe.
Yeah, and Rodney King is just a motorist.

Cycling without a light. What a criminal. Definitely in need of tasering.

There is always more to the story than the headline indicates.

When I read the article, it said he was DUI, and ran from the officer after being warned not to. It's not like the officer just tasered him for not having a light.

Yeah, and I suspect there's even more to it than that. I'm betting they know this guy rather well.
I can tell you that in my sons' formative years they were getting stopped frequently for things like not having a license plate light. Then the cops would check ID's of everybody in the car and arrest whoever had an active arrest warrent. They seldom had to go away empty handed.
Thank God those days are over.
Is there a video caption on Youtube?

Sounds as though this cyclist was lucky he did not get a sterner treatment.
Riding without lights is enough to catch a policemans eye- or should be- but obviously there was something more to this character than a simple misdemeanour.

I'd rather get tased for night riding without lights, than have my ticket punched by a Dodge Ram for not being seen ...

What, no litterin' charge? This guy will end up on the 'Group W' bench if he's not careful.

And they took 27 eight by ten color glossy photos with circles and arrows on the back of each one, explaining what each one was, to be used as evidence against him.

Being as the culprit was running away at the time, I'd say he was a jogger rather than a cyclist. Just like in a triathlon, he had completed the transition.

Reminds me of the only ticket I've ever gotten in 50+ years of cycling and driving:
Saturday morning at 6:00 a.m. in Eugene, Oregon. Two people on the road, me on a bike and a cop in a car. He ticketed me for running a stop sign. I didn't try to flee on foot or get tasered, tho. Ah, if only I had it to do all over again! (I know I could beat that rap!)

The Chico, Ca PD should be relocated to Santa Ana, Ca! There would be more stops and arrests than they could keep up with. It is unfortunate that the local papers do not seem to cover the number of motor vehicle and bicycle collisions in the area. There has to be tons! I would be interested in seeing the stats.
TriathaCrime - Ride Run and Swim Not exactly in that order. (I'll get nailed for that comment!)

The officer was county, Sherriff.
Hamilton City is a bit slummy (sorry Hamiltonians... truth hoits).
Antioch has the worst cops in the state, maybe the country!
The Butte County Sherriffs are just o.k. IMO

Oops, Glenn County...
By the way, cycling in Chico has a big black eye because of the reckless student types running stop signs, redlight, and just generally acting *****holy.

What was the alternative, chasing him down and hitting him, perhaps in the thigh, with a night stick? I think tasing would be less painful.
As far as the light thing, I in Asbury Park, NJ a cop told me, from a car window, I needed a headlight. I said OK and he left.

Chasing him down? You must be kidding. Most cops are so overweight, they can't run more than a few steps:)

and the judge walked in with his seeing eye dog,
a typical case of blind justice.
