Classic & Vintage - Pedal Dust-cap resource

I've lost one of the pedal dust-caps for my '86 Le Tour. The pedal says "SP-150."
One of the local shops just shrugged when they saw my pedals, and the local co-op didn't have anything that fit. If anyone can tell me what they are and maybe point me in the right direction for somewhere to find a replacement set, I'd be grateful. I'm not worried about them being exactly the same. They just need to fit, and match (fit being the more important of the two).

I have never been able to find any pedal dust caps anywhere. Fortunately, when I bought my most recent Capo, I just happened to have a 1960 Agrati dust cap that I had saved from my very first Capo after the frame broke. My general rule is never to scrap any bicycle or major component without salvaging all of its small bits, because they require only a modicum of storage space, and you never know when they will come in handy.

I lost a pedal dust cap from my Specialized Allez Sport. The pedals and cap are a plastic composite. The cap slips in from the end. It does not screw on. I had a piece of 3/4" steel tubing and cut off not quite an inch. I brazed a piece of thin steel over the end and ground it to fit the tubing. I slipped it into the hole on the end of the pedal. I also tied it in with some small gauge wire criss-crossed over the end of the dust cap and through the pedal to keep it from working out. It is not elegant, but it works.

If so, I may have a "field expedient" solution. It is one
I wrote about here last year for Shimano 600EX dust cap
replacements. Works great on those pedals and I think will
work on yours too but how much to trim may be different and
you may not need electrical tape for a tight fit.

Mine are (or the one that is left is) gray, but other than that you described it.

If it's of any help to you, those pedals were made by SR (Sakae-Ringyo). Best bet might be the junked parts bins of an old Mom-'n-Pop LBS. :)

I don't think Santa Cruz HAS any more bike shops like that! :(

The Bicycle Inn was a really great little shop, but you might try Family Cycling Center on 41st.
Or The Spokesman downtown. The Bicycle Trip would be another one.

I refuse to believe that you can't find the dust cap somewhere in Santa Cruz! ;)

um- i have lost three caps for a pair of campy replica mks' - my lbs (I'm in portland, there's maybe 5-10 lbs' in walking distance) has'em in bulk last time I checked... someone let me know if the mks caps work... I could send one...

I too have a pair of SR SP-150 pedals. The dustcap, as stated, is plastic. It appears that they get brittle with age. I know because I tried to remove one, and with the gentlest twist, it cracked.:(

Harris and Rivendell carry the MKS pedal dust caps, too.

Looks are deceiving. I have 2 caps here that look identicle. Both have serrated edged with a an allen key center. They're different sizes.

For what it's worth... you ain't nuts!

Here is a pair of SR pedals which I just dragged out of storage. This model is the SP 100 AL... which are copies of Campagnolo quill pedals with black alloy cages. -- Very nice quality and very smooth!

As you already discovered, the odd thing about these pedals are indeed the alloy dust covers. The outer diameter of the threads on these are roughly 1 mm. smaller than Campagnolo (or MKS copies). These accept a 6 mm. Allen wrench [hex-key] in the recessed center hole, and the serrations on the outside may be only decorative - in any case they definitely will not match the notches of Campagnolo or MKS pedal tools, but the 6 mm. hex-key alternative is much better anyway. :thumb:

One clever feature, perhaps not necessary on these quill pedals, but good for symmetrical touring pedals, is the easy to distinguish notches on the left pedal axle between the wrench flats (near the crank threads). I always go nuts sorting through a box of old Lyotard touring pedals trying to separate the right and left pedals.

Well, don't feel bad, but if you need them, I'll definitely sell them to you. If you don't need them, I can keep them around as back-ups for some of my other pedals.

I want to join the party and say that I am also looking for a dust cap for an old set of SR pedals. I know the MKS caps don't fit because I just got one from my LBS-- and just as everyone else has said, they definitely don't fit.

I found an old Sakae Ringyo catalog online that shows their line of pedals from the 80s. Sure enough, every single one has these oh-so-hard-to-get dust caps. http://equusbicycle.com/bike/sakae/catalog18/index.html

I am looking for a dust cap (or two) for a Sakae SP-155 pedal. These are definitely metal, not plastic, and look just like the MKS caps on Velo. Anyone know if the MKS caps will fit?

A little back woods tech for y'all
Go to any auto parts store or engine rebuilder, ask to see their assortment of engine block freeze plugs. They are made of soft steel and if you find the right size will push snugly into female pedal openings. For male ends the plugs are soft enough to self thread on to the pedal. Paint to match or spray with clear coat for a natural metal finish. Some come galvanized as well.
