Roll your own Garmin maps - possible?

My GPS finally arrived - a Garmin Legend HCx. Has anyone tried to roll your own maps? I'm thinking it would be cool to get some super-detailed maps of, say, my commuting area.

Is there a way to use google maps, etc as a starting point for this? Or would this involve coding and be far too much work?

Easiest interface I've found for DIY maps is from www.geopainting.com.

Plus, you can brush up on your Russian.
