Singlespeed & Fixed Gear - Night safety on a fix

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.
Just a question about night safety on the fixie. I interacted with an automobile tonight on the way home. It was dusk so it was getting to be time for me to turn the lights on but I was on my fix and don't have any lights mounted on that bike as it is usually the daytime bike. Do you folks use lights or reflectors? Or do you just run stealth really carefully?

I think being alive is mor important than being cool...I wear an ankle strap. Plus the reflective strands in the Chrome bag...
And if you have alleys to ride, do so! You leaern more about America based on its garbage!
:)
Good answer. Time to get another set of lights.

165-48:17: chrome bags are awsome, eh? but i really do wonder if that reflective stuff actually works...
Mount a blinky on your seatpost. If you get caught without your lights, that's always there and you can't watch your back all the time, so I think that's the most important thing. If I know I'm going to be out in the deep darkness I usually run an ankle band and some sort of headlight. Once it starts getting dark early, we start doing night road rides anytime the trails are in no shape to ride, so I run my off-road lights since we hit a lot of unlit backroads.

I've got a blinkey for running that clips on the back of my shorts. That sucker is going in my bag just in case I end up out at dusk so at least I'll be visible from behind. I think in an ideal world I'd throw in the blinkey, a small headlamp and an ankle band or two if I though there was any chance in hell I'd be out when it was starting to get dark. Keeps the bike clean, keeps me safe.

i use a red blinky for the rear, and i tend to stay on city streets at night, so the only thing that a headlight would do is maybe prevent my getting doored...but i ride pretty far out from parked cars, so i don't worry about it much.
I agree safety is utmost importance. I have a blinky on my fixed so I can ride it at night/early morning. I like to keep my fixed nice and simple but my life is important to me and the blinky I can take off in about 1 second, since just clips into the band that goes around the seatpost.

I keep a red blinky on my seatpost all the time. I also use a removable front lamp when I know it is going to be dark.
When I was younger I use to dress all in black and cruise my black bike at night. I had many encounters with motorists but it was fun.
Now I just want to make it home from the bar in one piece.
If you have not ridden at night then be careful. Motorists look for headlights. If you ride your bike at night they DO NOT SEE YOU.
i have a blinker that i clip onto the back of my jeans/shorts. i prefer that to having it on the seatpost because people like to steal anything off your bike in new york city.
be sure to turn your light off when you go into a store/bar/party, or you will be known as the flashing bike nerd for the rest of the night...

I ride a blinking rear light with reflectors on my bag. I also have a removable blinking LED on the front bars but it's out of batteries....

Planet Bike makes nice quick release front blinkies that don't leave anything mounted to your bars. Clean during the day, bright and safe at night. I have a set of blue LEDs that screw on to my valve stems for a little extra flavor. They look pretty cool on a dark street when I am moving along. They are for cars, though, so I have to mount them with presta-schrader adaptors.

I commute on my fixie, year-round, day & night, rain or shine. I run the same lights that I used to on my multi-geared commuter. 15 watt niterider light in front, 19 LED niterider blinkie in back.
There's no reason not to be as lit-up as possible if riding at night. Reflectors don't help at all with cross-traffic, which is a greater hazard than traffic from the rear. LIttle cute front LED lights are visible only if viewed head-on. At off-angles, they are just another dim spot of light in the night.

i have a red blinkie mount on my seatpost and a red blinkie that is either on the outside of my bag or on the seatpost, daytime or not. i wouldn't recommend riding at night with no lights. whenever i see people who do that i cringe.

I have a blinking red planet bike for my messenger bag. Also I have a 5w and 10w set up from vistalite. I just run the cord into my messenger bag where I keep my long, light weight battery.
Seems to work for me...
