I put in my commute time and effort this morning. It came up with a number significantly higher than my HRM did.
What I really liked, however, was the Tip at the bottom of the formula thing. I had put in a 75 minute ride. It suggested that I could burn twice as many calories if I rode for 150 minutes. Somehow, a 3-hour commute each way just doesn't seem attractive to me :)

hm.. so just 8 minutes of cycling to drink that nice mountain dew eh.. hm.
I wish that prefilled in weight on your link was my weight. That would be nice :)
weather.com for my current annual miles using "moderate"
52,001.7 and if I just double my hours I could like double my calories.
I was playing with bikejournals calorie calc (http://www.bikejournal.com/calories_calc.asp?firstTime=1)the other day (you may need to be a member)
Bikejournals which uses distance and avg mph (possibly just to get to minutes) with my weight gives me 43,380 for the year.
With the lower that means 12.4lbs potential weight gain saved I guess since well I haven't lost any :(
Seems a bit high: 2,000 calories burned for a moderate 1.5 hour ride.
I guess I should start eating more. :)
EDIT: Eh. The Bikejournal one said 1,900. Maybe I am burning up a storm???

These things are notably inaccurate. Sometimes I worry this is the message people take from them.

That does seem a little high. I use the 40 cal/mile formula because its simple so it takes me about 3 hrs to do 50 miles to burn 2000 calories. I realize there are always other variables but I'd trust the 40 cal/mile as opposed to 2000 calories in a moderate 1.5 hr ride.

That knocks it down to about 800 :(
Aren't weight and rider fitness level variables?

This calculator is really only useful to show a trend......
Weight is a variable as it takes X effort to move each additional kilogram. If you use the 40 cal rule, you may be skewing the data to the low side as well. I suspect that the true figure would be between the 40 cal figure and the calculators figure.
