Looking to get into more AM style of riding from XC and I ran across a KHS AM1000 frame. Wondering if anyone has any experience with these? I hear they are a tad heavy, but for ~$300-$400 it seems like a good way to get into more aggressive riding.

I think you've pretty much figured it out. Good frame, slightly heavy, excellent price. I race on an XC Team and can say the same. The value is great on the KHS but isn't as blingy as some of the others, mainly because of weight I assume.

The heavier the frame the less chance of it failing. Lighter is NOT always better.

Yeah, that's why no one ever breaks Walmart bikes.

I thought it was because no one rides them.

Yep. I have no problem with mine. I was going to sell it this year and get another, maybe even race a hardtail instead, but I decided I'll keep it for at least another year and get another training bike (29er SS). I'll see how I like that and may enter some races on that too.

I would not be able to do that with a Turner Nitrous because of my weight. If I ever got one of those and stayed near the weight limit for the season, I would still sell it at the end. I'd be too worried about something happening to it with too much use.

Ah I just thought of something else. I am a tad on the light side myself and this would be my first FS bike and it has a spring not just an air / oil shock. I'm sure I will play around with dialing in the rear suspension for a while, but at 125 - 145 lbs (my weight changes drastically a lot) I may need a lighter spring or what's the point of riding FS? Does that logic sound about right?
