I'm hoping that this is a no brainer but thought I'd run it past some of you who will, hopefully, know more than I.

I have Raleigh Record Ace with full Sante groupset. The gears are worn as the chain jumps on the rear sprockets. Also, the bikes in France at my sister's and needs something a bit wider than the 12-18 it has on it. Now, I have just seen on e-Bay a Sante freewheel that seems to be just what I want.

My question is, are the two definately compatible or did Sante change from freewheel to cassetteat any point? I'm not fully familar with these and am unable to inspect my hub as it's another country.

Sante hubs came in both freewheel and cassette versions. However, they are readily distinguishable. The cassette version has a hub shell center section that noticeably bulges, starting about 1.5cm from the drive side flange. Also, the hubs may be marked with part numbers in the center of the shell. The cassette version is FH-5000 while the freewheel version is HB-5000.

Even if you have the freewheel version, there is another precaution. The Sante rear derailleur came in two cage lengths. The RD-5000 is only rated for a 24T large cog, while the RD-5000-LS is rated for a 28T maximum cog. Again, the part numbers should be marked, on the back of the derailleur parallelogram. Diven the original cog range, I suspect you may have the shorter cage version.

I have a 12-26 tooth 7-speed Sante freewheel hanging on my wall right now. I'd trade it for something interesting, PM me .

Thank you very much for your responses. My rear mech is a short cage model and so the 13-26 Sante freewheel that's offerd on e-Bay may not be suitable for fitting anyhow. Perhaps I'll give my sister a call and get here to send some photos of the rear wheel. I'm sure sh'e going to love doing that!

Your mech will work fine with 26 teeth.
