Southern California - Mulholland Ride - Feb. 16th

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

I'm planning a nice little KOM training ride through the Santa Monica mountains. Not gonna be fast, but I'll be pushing myself.
Name of Ride: Magicant Mulholland Trainer
Date: Saturday, February 16, 2008
Start location: Calabasas Commons
Meet time: 7:15 AM
Roll time: 7:30 AM (8AM for the more advanced riders)
Distance: 85 miles
Elevation Gain: 8500+ ft.
Difficulty Level: Advanced
Routeslip/Ride Description/Other Details: No SAG, fully self-supported (unless you bring your momma to wipe your nose). Riders of differing skill levels will be participating and will be splitting off over the course of the ride but we'll try to keep together in smaller groups.
IMPORTANT: this is a very challenging ride, with extreme amounts of climbing, some traffic on portions of the route and fast descents. Please be aware of your own skill level and participate accordingly!! Everyone is riding at their own risk and responsible for his or her own self!
A couple of refuel stops along the way, with a food break at Neptune's Net (with several miles of flat route prior to the last climb up Latigo, so you have time for digestion).
Here's the route and route slip.

I might be up for this one if I don't race the next day.
This is a possibility...
I'd rather not drive to the start, though. How far to the Calabasas start is it from, say PCH and Topanga? I might want to come over the hill and meet up, then split off again when we get back over to PCH.

Very close, it's just mostly uphill. If you take Topanga -> Old Topanga, Old topanga finishes at Mulholland in Calabasus.

I may join you for this one. I haven't done any good climbs in a while. I'm not going for KOM so I may choose to do half the ride instead. Actually, 50 miles sounds like a good number. Oh...will there be punch and pie?

That looks like a shortened version of the Mullholland Century I did last year except we started with an Old Topanga/pch/Malibu Cyn loop and ended climbing back up Mullholland from PCH. Ended up being 108 miles with, if I remember correctly, 8000+' of climbing. Looks like fun.

Joel, if you, or anyone else, would like to join our club ride this Saturday we are going from CSUN to Mulholland, down Westlake, through Hidden Valley, over to Moorpark Ridge and back through Santa Susana. Start at 8:00.

I don't know if I'll have the medical clearance to do this ride, but I'm up for at least a partial. I may join you at Las Posas and do an out-and-back of Latigo.

Thanks John! If we weren't already doing the ride up to Santa Barbara this weekend, I'd definitely join in.

Based on the poll so far, maybe Ralph IS a viable write-in candidate:

Plenty of parking at the Calabasas Commons for those not familiar with the area.

Joel, sounds like a great ride, but I won't be able to make it since I will be providing SAG support for the Butterfield Double Century.
Hopefully I will be able to make the next training ride.
If the weather is nice and I'm available, I'm in !... Probably would pick you up along the route in Westlake...
I'm going to ride MC, never ridden in the area, haven't traveled there in decades, so I'm open to any and all training rides prior to,that I can get to.
Back in 12/16, Happytime had proposed a schedule, has anyone seen anything gel out of that?
I'm just deluded enough to think I might like to do this. Do you have an estimate for the average speed, combining climbs and descents? Say you get a nice group of 15 or so, including Ralph on a Sears 3 speed. Is this a, "finish in whatever time you can, there's no regrouping/stops, see you at the start of the next ride" kind of ride?
I'm not a strong climber, at this point I climb for the decent and because I'm deluded enough to believe I'll get stronger:roflmao:, so I was thinking about the same thing after I posted earlier..... regroups part of the ride or should I bring a map:D?

I'll be in the "clean-up" group in the back. Yeah, that's it. I'll be there "on purpose."

Hope I can get there. Picking up my new ride this AM and strong pull to ride with my usual Sat. collaborators but equally to begin checking out the MC terrain, the Commons and http://www.shopcommons.com/ are on in the same? Sorry don't know the area. PM the details?

magicant
02-04-08, 11:01 AM
Probably roll at 7:30, 8:00 at the latest. I'll decide for sure in the next few days.
I had to change the route up a little bit - it was longer than I had wanted but without as much climbing as there was supposed to be.
So I added Stunt in :D and cut out the Westlake to Potrero loop. As was the original intent, this gets it to 85 miles and 8000+ feet of elevation gain.
Here's a preview (not final by any means, I'll tweak it up through this weekend) :

I'll join you on a partial route, Joel, unless my Mom calls an audible and changes her birthday dinner to a birthday breakfast. ;)
Most likely, I'll start at Neptune's Net and go up Latigo, perhaps meeting up with you guys on Mullholland. Then come back down and have lunch with you guys at NN. If my leg feels wonky on Latigo, I'll just turn around and head back down, that way I don't hold anybody up. :p

Unless I suddenly sprout wings or a motor pack out my behind, I'll not be there. I'm going to have a lot of work ahead of me to get back into the appropriate climbing shape for these types of hilly rides. :(
