I need a cheap, durable rear tire. Thinking about getting a continental gatorskin but theyre kinda ugly and pricey. Any suggestions?

continental hometrainer. Comes in a delightful shade of orange sure to bring out your inner hipster, and will last longer than you if you decide to do mad skidz in traffic. A perfect tyre for all your dumbass ideas.
Lots of skid patches and cheap tires.

soma everwear, it's pretty much designed for this
unfortunately it doesn't exactly match up with the cheap part

i ran through one of those as a front tire. the sidewall wore through, probably because of scrapeage from a pothole or curb.

I prefer Gatorskins to Armadillos personally. Roadrunners are a solid option.

Soma tires are made by Panaracer. Just get the Panaracer version for much cheaper...the only downside is that the Panaracers don't come in colors. But if you plan on skidding your tires to an early grave anyway, who cares.

I have heard the same about Soma just being rebadged Panaracers, but looking at the treads between the two websites, I can't peg a match. Tread patterns don't look the same for any of the Panracer vs Soma. The closest match I see is between the Soma New Xpress tire and the Pasela, but that is not in the 700c version.

Once the novelty wears off, fg skidding seems silly, pointless, and amateurish. I'd rather put my energy into going fast, and I'd rather buy high quality tires, and get as much mileage out of those tires as I can.

I don't know exactly, but the tread pattern isn't really what matters. Whats more important in terms of tire longevity is the rubber compound, thickness, and tire construction. I'm betting the Pasela Tourgaurds (PT) are similar in those respects. I've used PTs and they are long lasting tires and can withstand a lot of skidding. I've never used Soma tires, so I don't know how they would compare. But I'm betting the PTs are a better bargain, even if they are not exactly the same as Soma everwears.
Whatever you buy, do not ever buy Continental ultrasport tires. The low price and decent looks will tempt you, but those tires are cursed by Satan, and will puncture just by looking at them.

i realized it when some kid passed me, and every time he had to slow down, he skidded in the upright pelvis-to-stem manner. capable, but awkward looking. i realized that i really rarely skid in favor of just using resistance, or the occasional skip. i think i skidded once on my ride home, paying attention to it.
still, though, i find that i prefer gatorskins and rubino pros to other tires. i had a michelin prorace 2 and it was pretty flatprone. gatorskins square off if you ride skidheavy, as to rubino pros, but i'm okay with the way they ride and given my style, their durability.

I love my gatorskins. Ugly though? They are a black chunk of rubber compound just like all the other tires out there. Not sure how they are ugly. Although they do have a tiny accent of yellow around the name which is a nice little touch but I only noticed that because I spend a few hours a day making eye love to my bike.

Soma everwear 26c in the back, panaracer stradius sport 26c in the front for grand total of 50 bucks unless you get a deal like me. The tread is exactly the same the only difference is the thickness of the tires. The soma is 3mm thicker so use it in the back. Everwear + Stradius Sport = Best combo ever.

I was just having this same dilemma a couple days ago and the nice folks at milwaulkee cycles sent me a copy of Cog when I bought my new cranks and they had a pretty in depth review. Soma everwears seemed to be their choice, though a proper gearing (a 17 on the back is probably most common) will make your tires last longer, as will a front brake. I think I'll pick up some of the Soma's when my current rear wears out.

A friend of mine just got a pair of the Everwears and I checked them out. They seem to be really poorly made and cheap. Unless you really need the extra rubber I would advise you to get another tire. And yeah, there is no reason to skid excessively. I skid when needed but not that much. I've had a pair of Rubino Pros that I've ridden for 2+ years and they are still in great shape.

ps all of my everwears tires cracked on the side walls, every one.
and god forbid you have to corner in the rain with them.

Let's cut it out with the low blows. Lucian was a good friend of mine, and even if fungis is trying to start ****, you don't have to do that.
That being said, I love my Ultra Gatorskin. After over 3 months of riding that tire fixed, I've just now started to see thread.

I think, like Queerpunk stated, riding style has a lot to do with how long your tires do last. Topography plays a role in the life of your tires as well and maybe that's where the extra tire thickness can be a perk if you live in a hilly region

i'm not sure as far as skidding, but as far as normal riding wear n tear gatorskins are the ****. they're the only tires i've used in the past couple years (all city riding with broken glass, potholes,...) and i havent had one flat or any other problems. *knock on wood*

As far as the side walls go the soma's are rated up to 140psi and I don't think many people realize this and don't give them enough psi. I run mine at 120ish front and 123/4ish in the rear. I've been on mine for over 6 months with around 1000 miles on them and side walls are still doing fine. My gripe with the soma's would be how bad they square off and the compound is not my favorite for in the rain especially once it is squared off. That being said I have enjoyed them and would think about getting them again but I think I will run Gatorskins next. just my .02.

tires are worth riding different stuff. If you are looking for "cheap" and "long lasting" you might as well look for the fountain of youth or something. Think of the money you are saving on gas by riding teh bike. A soma everwear is probably 1 week of gas use and will last you at least a month.

If you actually bothered to do a search, you actually would have found the same answers. If you didn't in this case, you're either stupid, illiterate, or both.
Last time I searched tires for skidding, I ended up with Everwears, Armadillos, and Gatorskins being top choices. Imagine that...who woulda thunk it? Good thing you made a new thread because the answers this time around are totally different.
Oh, and just for the record, tires aren't something to cheap out on. Spend the money. If you don't have enough, save up $10-$20 more and get something nicer.

i would make more efficient gearing before tires. if you go through two or three tires at, say, $15 a piece, you could have already switched your cog or chainring to something with a higher skid patch count. a gatorskin with 17 skid patches will last you quite some time.
