Texas - Double Century or 150 miles one day in Texas - where/when?

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.
I am looking into riding a double century in 2008 and was wondering if anyone knows of any organized ones in Texas? I live in Houston, so something in this area would be ideal. I've already googled but came up with nothing. I'll even settle for a 150 mile ride all in one day. Just something more than a century. I don't really want to ride 150 or 200 miles solo/unsupported.

The group I just started riding with is planning on going from Houston to Austin in one day following the MS150 route. I think they are planning on doing it on the same day as the MS but I am not sure on that. It sounds like there will be at least 10 to 20 riders participating in the ride. More info later...
There used to be a double century that started downtown at about 4 AM sometime in July or August. It was self supported with a few volunteers helping out along the way. I looked into it a couple of years ago but could not find any info. You might talk to the people at Boone Cycles. I think someone mentioned that they might have some info.

Check out the Houston Rondenneurs (sp?) Club... google it and you'll find it. They do lots of really long rides, and I've heard they are a good bunch of folks.

May not be the mileage you're looking for, but check out "Bike Around the Bay".
It's definatly local, 2 day, and if the route goes as planned I think it's supposed to be close to 200 total. Although last year, the route was cut short because of construction. Oh yeah, and great scenery. I definatly plan on doing it.
Here's what the site says about last years ride....
"The new start in Anahuac will introduce two major changes to the route. The distance on the first day will change from 100 to 80 miles. The first day will end in Galveston as planned and it will not affect the distance on day two, 75 miles. Secondly, the route will not end at the new start location in Anahuac because of the construction on I-10, the finish on day two will be at Houston Raceway Park. At the finish there will be air-conditioned busses to take you to the start location at Ft. Anahuac Park. It is about a 20 minute ride and busses will run continuously throughout the afternoon on Sunday. "

I'm planning on doing the bike the bay. I'd be tempted to keep riding form Moody Gardens to my house, in Pasadena, in one day. That would put you close to the 150 mark. My only issue with that is going over the causeway without support. As for the route to my house, there are plenty of gas stations along 146 and or Highway 3.
Thanks for the replies. I did the bike around the bay last Oct. Great ride, but it was only 73/74 miles each day.
I'll have to check into the houston randonneurs. Looked at the website (thanks George). I need to find a glossary of all the abbreviations. Looks like I should start with the 200K, which is 125 miles. The only 300K (186 miles) is in 2 weeks, so that won't work. There are 200K rides on May 10th and Aug 16. According to the rules (http://www.rusa.org/brvreg.html), to finish a 200K one is allowed 13 hours, 30 minutes. Maybe I'll stick my nose in the randonneur forum and see if I can't learn a thing or two.

I don't think you can ride your bike on the causeway, I talked to a Galveston bike shop last year and they said it was illegal. Though it would be fun as hell if I didn't kill myself on the way up or down. I wish they would put a sidewalk on the causeway make a great bike getaway from Houston.

Correct about riding on the causeway, and you're not suppose to ride on sidewalks, either. ;)
The BATB ride received special permission to ride the causeway and the Fred Hartman Bridge. When we left Moody Gardens Sun morning, we regrouped in the Target parking lot near the causeway, separating in 3 groups by speed, and then they had us all cross in as little time as possible over the causeway. Was a fun downhill. Forgot how fast I got going down it.
