So its been 1 month now and I figured a post where people could share how they are doing so far on their annual goals.

To refresh, my goals are 2000 miles, lose 40 pounds (187 goal), and ride 3 centuries.

Mileage update:
As of tonight's ride I have 178.8 miles made up of 153 road miles and 25.8 miles on a stationary bike.
So that leaves 1821.2 miles to go.

Weight loss update:
My wieght is 222 as of this evening down from 227 without any real effort to change eating habits.
So 5 down 35 to go. This month I'm cutting out junk food at home, but I'll deal with lunch at work in March

Century update:
No centuries yet - centuries will be attempted at organize centuries in June, August, and October.

I'm feeling pretty good about my progress. How is everyone else doing?

I like this idea natbla!

My goals:

I want to ride 2000 miles next year
I want to be a true 'car lite' bike commuter
Continue to lose weight (I've lost 25lbs since August, got another 25lbs to go)
Participate in Sat. Spinner Miles (I didn't this year)
Keep up with my lifestyle changes. I'm cooking fresh foods, eating better, and exercising, I want to keep this up over the year.

So far I have 86 miles down, 1914 miles to go!
I have only driven maybe 4 times this year, and all of those were on occasions where both my wife and I needed to get somewhere. So far, every time I have needed to go out, I have ridden/taken the bus.
I am at 223lbs from 228, so yeah!
I love the Spinner Saturday graph :D
So far we are still eating good in the neighborhood, though tonight we went out

1)Before I get my Giro 26 (http://www.bacchettabikes.com/images/bikes/giro26_med.jpg) in February/March to be well below the 275 Max Gear+Rider weight limit.
2) 7500 miles in 08
<edited to remove gripes about weight limits and sizes>
Someone added #3 after my comment about never being on a ride with anyone except my spouse.
This is a team sport ya know? That should be one of your goals: 5 group rides and 1 charity ride in 2008.
1) I'm am just under 270 with my clothes/shoes/backpack with work clothes (will be seat bag on the giro). Water and lights probably push me over so still a bit to go.
2) 694 so far for the year so I'm on target. I'd have broken 700 easy but both my bikes are in the shop and we have been having wind advisories often :(
3) Well I was going to do the Superbowl ride this weekend but my merlin is in again for bottom bracket problems and both my rear wheels of my fuji are in for truing. I have a stand and a tension tool from park but can't get them to stay true.

I've lost 10 lbs since posting my goals! I am also riding the stationary bike (and learning to deal with the extreme boredom of being cooped up inside on the stupid thing). Also, as soon as I get my new swimsuit in the mail, I am going swimming twice a week. Yeah Me! Yeah Everybody!

bigtruck

I'm ahead of my monthly goal by 2 pounds

cyclokitty, I enjoy swimming as much as biking but our nearest pool is closed for a year Dam it

steve2k

I've done 172.72 miles of my 2008 goal of 2008 miles, so I'm bang on target (should have done 167 miles).
I've stopped eating junk but lost only 2lbs.

There's a "2008 in 2008" group on mycyclinglog.com, anyone's welcome to join by following this link: http://www.mycyclinglog.com/?g=229&p=2oo8 (http://www.mycyclinglog.com/?g=229&p=2oo8)

Good luck on your goals all, well done so far,
Steve

Bigtruck, that's disappointing! The local pool is a mere jump skip and a walk away. The lane times are convenient for me and it's affordable. I can't wait until my new suit arrives -- c'mon mail!

I also decided to try yoga for flexibility. I have a book called "Yoga for Regular Guys" so its not all froufrou. I hate froufrou.

The good news is I've been on the bike at least twice a week, and have done some form of exercise four times a week, every week this year and have accumulated over 100 miles. My speeds have also increased a measurable amount. This is progress...

The bad news is I'm already 250 miles below the training schedule I'm following to be ready for a ride (200K) the beginning of April. I'm now re-evaluating my ride choice, will look for a 100k or century instead. I also haven't lost any weight. :o

Let's see:

Planned Distance for January: 0km
Actual Distance for January 0Km

I'm right on target:D

627 miles for the year so far, 98%trainer miles. :(

- Century-a-month
- 4000 miles for the year
- Double century (S-t-P in the Fall)

Missed the January century. May skip February, too. It's a crappy cold snowy winter for Seattle and I just don't enjoy riding 7-10 hours in the freezing cold.
If I wasn't sick for 10 days and then moved apartments, I'd have hit my 400+ miles for the month. I only rode about half the month and got in 208 miles. So I'm on track for my 4000 for the year.
I've got some friends at work who are also interested in StP as a double, so I think I'll have a supporting cast of coworkers to ride with. :)

363 road miles. Lost 5 lbs Then gained 2 lbs back. Started at 223 lbs, now 220 lbs.
Trying for 50 plus miles tomorrow.

Except for recording more of my album (still a goal), I've changed my bike goals (http://bikeforums.net/showpost.php?p=5835525&postcount=26) for the year to:

Ride a lot
Lose more weight
Have fun

...and that's it. Everything else is details.

Tom Stormcrowe

Depending on how things go, I may be up on the Upper Peninsula of Michigan again this year. There are a couple of things I wanted to do last year and knee issues forced me to shorten the tour, so I think I'm going to do it again. Maybe a loop around Lake Michigan.

Too rainy to even think about my commute. I have done some time on the trainer.

98%trainer miles. :(

That must be so frustrating, I admire your dedication so many miles on a trainer and I'm thankful I live in a climate where I do not need a trainer

I'm feeling pretty good about my progress. How is everyone else doing?

OK, I'm NOT feeling good about my progress. Or more accurately, my lack of progress. And now that my cross-country tour is effectively scratched for 2008, I need to refocus and get back on track.

Riding goals:

Complete the Neils on Wheels Pittsburgh to Washington DC ride June 1 to June 8. 335 miles, give or take a few.

Complete a few two to four day tours - my house to Baltimore and back, for instance, could be a three day trip.

Ride the MS City to Shore at the end of September, riding from Cherry Hill, NJ, to Ocean City. This time I want to complete the century ride and ride back the following day. 175 miles for the weekend.

Develop the skills I need to ride better. This means - finally - learning to mount the bike 'properly', developing enough balance to signal with confidence, and generally becoming the sort of cyclist other cyclists would want to ride with. I don't want anyone for a second to ever consider me as 'special needs.'

Ride with my bike club. I've had a love-hate relationship with Bicycle Club of Philadelphia. Individual members have been very helpful, but there's still the fact I can't ride in most of their organized rides because I'm not fast enough.

And finally, ride with folks from my church. At least five of them have ridden to Spruce Lake in the Poconos, which is about 110 miles and 4000 feet of climbing. I'm not sure I'm up to the ride to Spruce Lake, but....

Weight goal:

In July I was 17 pounds from my weight goal of 225. I'm now about 40 pounds above my goal weight. I feel sluggish, I look bloated, I don't fit into my clothes, my conditioning has deteriorated, and every time someone calls me "inspirational" I feel like a liar. Also, I'm fighting the sense of isolation that obesity breeds in me. I don't like it.

Other goals:

Finish the book(s) I am under contract to finish. :-)

racer21

My goal for this year is to ride on RAW (Ride Around Washington). The ride is 6 days, and 5 of those days have more climbing then I've done before in 1 day. About 3200 ft is the most I've done.

As far as my training has gone thus far, for the last month, I've been going to the gym 3 times a week, and working with a trainer twice a week.

I've been on a few bike rides, but the snow, and ice, have interrupted that a bit.

Overall I feel like I'm on a good pace... it's amazing how good of a motivator utter fear can be.

A thought on this problem. Get comfortable enough on the bike, map out a ride and then lead it at your pace. It's highly likely that you'll find many people who want to participate in a ride that's at a speed that's below the pace of a club's normal rides. These people could include faster riders who want a recovery ride, beginning riders looking to increase their distance, or just people who don't want to participate in the hammerfests that are so common in clubs.

Goals for 2008...

1. 3,500 miles 233 miles as of 1/31. A little behind pace but I was sick the first week of January. Plus knocking off a few centuries this summer will bring the numbers up ;). Not bad for "off season"

2. Sub 6 hour century Feeling confident that I will do this as training is going well

3. 200k ride (either solo or organized) Feel confident that this will happen as training is going well

4. At least 4 century or longer rides (time is the biggest issue here) shouldn't be a problem. Just need to book 'em

5. Either the MS 150 or Tour de Cure (or both) Looking at TDC now

6. Climb Monteagle, TN (would be my longest climb to date) would be part of the TDC ride here. I am confident I can do it based on my training progress

7. Find a good weight to settle in at by 6/30/2008 (thinking about 170 lbs - 27 pounds to go) About 23 pounds to go. Keeping pretty close to losing one pound per week. Have weeks here or there where I don't

8. Complete a sprint distance triathalon (should be pretty easy as long as the doc gives my knee the ok for running) Have been able to swim 1350m (which is way more than enough for this goal) and have jogged two miles once. Really havent been "training" for swimming or running as of yet. Also haven't gotten to the doctor for my knee yet either. However, I still feel confident that this goal can be accomplished as the swimming and running distances are pretty short for the event I am looking at.

Biking goals for 2008:

1. 3000 miles - 221.5 miles through 2/2, so I am behind pace by about 50 miles

2. Work out twice a week. - managed to lift 6 out of 10 scheduled days

3. Go sub clyde status - need to lose about 35 pounds, and haven't lost any yet. Need to get serious about what I eat to be successful here.

4. Commute, utility bike as much as possible. Weather has not been kind here.

5. Do a century. Not yet but hey there is time.

Well not bad in terms of workload. Not the ambitious goals I set for myself, but if I keep it up I will have a good year.

That's one heck of a month!

Are you riding S-t-P, also? For CBC rides this year I'm doing:
- Chilly Hilly
- Flying Whells
- S-t-P
- HPC (maybe. 800 rider limit; if it's not full by 03-01-08 then I'll enter.)

It will be a busy couple weeks, that's for sure.

I'm planning doing most of the cascade rides this year.
-Chilly Hilly, Flying Wheels, STP.

STP and RSVP, the plan is to ride those with my wife on our tandem, but we haven't ridden it much as of yet, so the jury is out on that.

I won't be doing HPC, as I will be on a bike trip in France, thru the Loire valley.

Last year I didn't ride much at all, I signed up for Chilly Hilly, and didn't go, and that kind of set the tone for the year.

Gotten off to a better start this year.

CliftonGK1

Last year I did the 25 miler for the Flying Wheels, and the 44 miler Tour de Cure.
On an almost 40 pound, fat tire, rigid frame, 17 year old Stumpjumper.

New bike this year, so new mileage goals. Not necessarily faster, but I'm going a lot farther: Centuries for most of my organized rides.

Last year I did the 50 (44) Flying Wheels. The previous year I Tour De Cure, 44 mile, and FW 65 mile loop. This year the plan is to do the 65 for Tour De Cure and 100 for FW.

If you want to do some climbing, you should look into the 7 Hills Kirkland. It's a good ride.

Looks like fun! I'll have to decide which course I want to sign up for with that one since it's not too long after I'll be doing a century on the TdC.

A ride leader usually assumes some responsibility for assisting with mechanical problems. I'm not sure I'm comfortable enough with those to lead a ride.

Actually, my problem with BCP rides might be fear. My first and only experience on a BCP group ride was in April of last year. I was dropped by a ride instructor in a part of Philadelphia I'd never visited. I was humiliated and mocked in front of other club members, and then I felt more so when I brought the matter up on the BCP email list. The club made things up to me, but still.....

I rode a flat century at a pace of nearly 12 MPH, so I should be able to handle one of the club's D rides. Riding by myself or with friends means I can see myself as a real cyclist despite my obesity and crooked legs. I'd rather be a cyclist than a fat cripple who tries to ride a bike.

Finally got to ride my 8 mile commute home today, Felt GREAT!!!

Neil, I submit to you that you are a real cyclist. ;)

Fact of the matter is that you've overcome serious obstacles to get where you are and that should be enough of a matter of pride that the small minded meanness of some people should be rolling off your back like water off a duck's feathers. :D I know it's easier said than done though. ;)

Keep at it, and you eventually stuff their meanness right back down their throats without even having to confront them simply by succeeding :D

I feel terrible about what I have done in 2008 so far. On the one hand I said I wanted to train smarter, using intensity based training instead of simply riding mile after mile. In that regard I have stayed a steady course. I am happy with the intensity of the workouts. On the other hand I also said that I wanted to reduce my mileage this year by 25%. Instead this past month I tripled the mileage over the same period a year ago. I am so ashamed. Can't seem to stick to a plan. Oh well, I will try better next month.

tdbmd

Hmm,

My goals for 2008 are 1500 miles on the bike and 250 miles of running. We have had a pretty rough winter here in NE so far, so no bike miles to report but a new Computrainer should be here this week!

I am on track with my running having logged 31 miles so far and my average pace per mile is now down below 11 min/mile after starting at about 14 min/mile.
