Great Lakes - I rode on Lake Monona tonight.

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

It kind of sucked. I thought it would be awesome. I saw some open water, and decided to call it quits.
That is all.

If you HTFU you can just skip across the open water at high speed.

Nah... the trick is to rip around monona bay around noon and scare the ice-fishermen. now THAT'S entertainment.

Open water, wow- that's surprising. And scary.
I thought about pulling a sled of hot coffee and brandy to sell to the ice fisherman on Monona Bay. Here's your chance to get in on the ground floor of an exciting opportunity!

The ice seemed very solid almost everywhere, although with plenty of wheel grabbing rifts.
The open water I saw was near the yahara outlet, or whatever the name of that little channel across the isthmus. Anyway, the riding surface was much bumpier and crappier than I thought it would be, so I took the water as a sign. Maybe it would freeze smoother under different conditions.

The open water is partially caused by the fact the MGE dumps out its warm water into Lake Monona.
How about riding to Picnic Point and riding from there back to shore on Lake Mendota? The University Bay part of the left (west) of Picnic Point tends to be a bit smoother. And pretty solid.
What we need is a bike built like a snowmobile but with cranks to power the belt (good resistance training!). Maybe on the utility bike forum...
Go to this website to see what lakes are smooth:
