Classic & Vintage - appreciate old standard bicycles?

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.
I've bought all kinds of old standard bicycles at garage sales and turn a few spokes tighten hear & there and a 20 dollar bicycle Is worth a lot...nothing wrong with these bicycles at all..I ride em around all the time I really enjoy & finding a new appreciation for old standard bicycles..and for next to nothing price wise?Eh maybe I'm on to something I'll never have to buy a new bicycle again.
I agree, it is amazing what people throw away and sell for a couple of bucks at a yard sale. I recently saw a 10 speed Schwinn Varsity in good condition go for $10.00 at a yard sale-the man of the house proudly told me he was replacing the Schwinn with a new mountain bike - a Huffy. The Schwinn would have served him much better than the new Huffy but people seem to prefer New over better quality. I commute 10 miles each way on a 3 speed Schwinn from the mid 80's and find it very reliable. I have several like new bikes in my shed that are over 25 years old that will outlast me given the proper care.
Right..I got about a half dozen of em all fix up..I like the old ccm..It's got a couple of down tubes on each side of the seat tube..It's called a encore I put a 20t cog on It and that geared It down enough for
me just fine, nothing wrong with It,I even bought new rubber & tubes for It[old standard]and they still sell the old standard stuff too by the way?you might have to order sometimes but they can still get that old British Standard rubber. And there just a joy to ride..sometimes first thought Is the best,I agree has far has handlebars go anyway?
I agree, and as older bikes are turning up at yard sales and thrift stores-some of us will prosper.
My favorite bikes are lugged steel roadbikes from the 80's, friction shifting, downtube shifters, etc.
Elegant simplicity.
I also like the older steel bikes. I have six of them in my garage right now. They are in various states of repair, of course!
My wife tries to understand... :fight:
