"The 33"-Road Bike Racing - Diet question

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

High glycemic index foods: bagels, white flour, candy, etc. That tends to increase insulin production in response which subsequently hinders your body's ability to burn fat, correct? I presume that anyone trying to lose weight for cycling would be well advised to pay attention to this.
Discuss.
I should really have my Yodels ready for when I read the responses, but I'm too lazy to go to the store.

I keep the candy and refined sugar to a bare minimum and shoot for all whole grains, but I'm a sucker for bagels.
I don't know too much about the science behind the GI hype but I've tried to somewhat abide by the rule of low GI before events and in general, and medium-high GI for recovery. Not sure it's working but it does justify my post-ride bagel.
The secret to happiness after three hours in the wind and rain is:
* Poppy seed bagel, toasted, cream cheese, sprouts, tomato, cucumber.
* Naked Juice Orange Mango Motion
* Coffee
I'm 5' 7" and 144lbs, down from 160 pounds when I started riding about a year and a half ago but I'm finding it hard to kick another five pounds or so. Part of that might be some fat loss and muscle gain, but I bet I could get to 140. I have yet to have any success tracking my diet very specifically over a long period of time (I get tired of using those website and spreadsheets).

Stop reading KL's emails and start reading my posts on PelotonEast. And yes, if you are extremely picky about what food you put into your body you should not only pay attention to the GI, but also the GL.

But Dr. W., they're so.....wordy. I don't think Ken's emails have a low G.I., because they make my blood sugar spike and I get drowsy right after reading them.

My breakfast is almost always one of the following:
* Oatmeal with granola and dried fruit.
* Yogurt with granola.
* Cereal.
The last one sticks out, but I usually have that one after the early morning rides or one of the first two before rides.

Cocaine has a low GI/GL.
And I don't think it would cause you to fail the CRCA Doping Controls.

I have bad OCD, so I eat the same brekkie everyday, no matter what. The rest of the day is up for grabs. I adhere to the Eddy Merckx plan. Eat whatever you want, just leave a little of everything on your plate.
I also avoid calories from liquid (unless on the bike), no white breads, no pork, nothing fried, no cookies, no ice cream...
Don't graze. Eat your meal and be done with it.
I played lacrosse in college @ 205-210. Now I'm at a steady 175-180.

Just joined a new gym and sat through a basic nutrition class. According to this nutritionist, GL more important than GI. Example: carrots are high GI but one needs to eat carrots. And I cannot believe that a bagel after a long ride is a bad thing. On off days maybe bad due to calories, but not if you are working out.

I encourage you to read everything you can on this topic. It webs out nicely and you will learn a lot about biochemistry and endocrinology. It is just one of those topics that always leads you to something else to learn... I love it.

It's not. Carbs consumed during and after exercise do not trigger insulin secretion as muscle contraction induces GLUT4 receptor presentation on it’s own. You also have a favourable carbohydrate concentration gradient across the cell membrane. It’s only when you overeat carbs with already full glycogen stores that you start to saturate both sides of the cell membrane and trigger an insulin resistant state.

The Professor has Spoken. Stop that talking back there. Mr. botto, is that something you'd like to share with the rest of the class?

Calories in - Calories out. Stop thinking so much!
Rice, bagels and all the other high glycemics haven't stopped this formula from working for me so far.

I just don't eat high glycemics or fatty foods at night (4-5 hrs before bed) and it works for me very well.

Believe it or not, the authorities frown upon doing this in the cafeteria.

We don't all have hummingbird metabolisms and we don't all ride 15,000 miles annually.
That lactic acid is seeping into your brain cells. Be careful (I've been there).

My problem is not carbs, but steak and beer.
==============
"Fat"
Your butt is wide, well mine is too
Just watch your mouth or I'll sit on you
The word is out, better treat me right
'Cause I'm the king of cellulite
Ham on, ham on, ham on whole wheat, all right
My zippers bust, my buckles break
I'm too much man for you to take
The pavement cracks when I fall down
I've got more chins than Chinatown
Well, I've never used a phone booth
And I've never seen my toes
When I'm goin' to the movies
I take up seven rows
Because I'm fat, I'm fat, come on
(Fat, fat, really really fat)
You know I'm fat, I'm fat, you know it
(Fat, fat, really really fat)
You know I'm fat, I'm fat, come on you know
(Fat, fat, really really fat)
Don't you call me pudgy, portly or stout
Just now tell me once again who's fat
When I walk out to get my mail
It measures on the Richter scale
Down at the beach I'm a lucky man
I'm the only one who gets a tan
If I have one more pie a la mode
I'm gonna need my own zip code
When you're only having seconds
I'm having twenty-thirds
When I go to get my shoes shined
I gotta take their word
Because I'm fat, I'm fat, sha mone
(Fat, fat, really really fat)
You know I'm fat, I'm fat, you know it
(Fat, fat, really really fat)
You know I'm fat, I'm fat, you know it you know
(Fat, fat, really really fat)
And my shadow weighs forty-two pounds
Lemme tell you once again who's fat
If you see me comin' your way
Better give me plenty space
If I tell you that I'm hungry
Then won't you feed my face
Because I'm fat, I'm fat, sha mone
(Fat, fat, really really fat)
You know I'm fat, I'm fat, you know it
(Fat, fat, really really fat)
You know I'm fat, I'm fat, you know it, you know
(Fat, fat, really really fat)
Woo woo woo, when I sit around the house
I really sit around the house
You know I'm fat, I'm fat, come on
(Fat, fat, really really fat)
You know I'm fat, I'm fat, you know it, you know it
(Fat, fat, really really fat)
You know, you know, you know, come on
(Fat, fat, really really fat)
And you know all by myself I'm a crowd
Lemme tell you once again
You know I'm huge, I'm fat, you know it
(Fat, fat, really really fat)
You know I'm fat, you know, hoo
(Fat, fat, really really fat)
You know I'm fat, I'm fat, you know it, you know
(Fat, fat, really really fat)
And the whole world knows I'm fat and I'm proud
Just tell me once again who's fat
