OK, so these wheels are a couple of weeks old. They're Record hubs laced to Open Pros with Wheelsmith DB spokes. All was well, got a little hop, tried to fix it and discovered that the three drive side spokes at the place where it was out of true were pulled all the way to the end of their threads, meaning no way to pull it toward the drive side. Loosened everything, tensioned it up, same problem, but in a different spot and now it's out of round as well. I replaced the spokes that were pulling through all the way with some that were the right length, thinking that the wheels were accidentally build up with the wrong length spokes in a few places. No dice; the spokes I put in are the same length as what I took out. I'm positive that they're the right length. When I retensioned everything, I started by tensioning the drive side and then tensioning the non drive side, truing and correcting for round errors as I went along.

So, here's the question: How do you get rid of this problem? The workaround I've come up with is to replace the offending spokes with shorter ones in order to give me more adjustability where there is a problem, but I don't feel like that's something I should need to do. What am I doing wrong? Should I start retensioning differently from the way I'm doing now?

Were these custom built? I'm sure you know that the drive side spokes are 2mm shorter than the non drive side - I'm just trying to get my head around the problem. Your LBS should correct the error free of charge.
Btw, when the wheel was tensioned, how far did the spokes reach into the nipple?

Sounds like the spokes are a bit to long and it does need to go back to whoever built it.
