I'm a very strong advocate for the appropriate treatment and proper care of the mentally ill, but this is unbelievable to me. My jaw dropped when I read this article. If it had been an average joe, helicopters and escorts would not have been used, and instead, the person would have been taken to the hospital directly without the hoopla. Paparazzi issues aside (this woman has enjoyed their attention over the years, so I have a hard time buying the excuse that for her protection and privacy, she needed to be shielded this time when taken away in ambulance), celebrities should not be allowed to use our tax dollars like this. I hope her family, her lawyer or she will at some point reimburse the LAPD so that the money can be put to far better use.

Those dollar figures are usually a little skewed. They probably include salary, fringe, WC, admin support, vehicles, equipment depreciation, etc.

Oh, I'm sure. But nonetheless, it cost money and someone will justify why. One cop car could have followed the ambulance.

I read somewhere that she pulls in about $750,000/month.
She can afford her own helicopter.

And a great big double-wide with a chopper pad on the roof.
Toss Here in the back of a VW van and roll....
Followed by one Walmart security guard.
Am I the only one that thinks maybe some of the issues might be from
paparrazi following Her every single move 24/7???
I know I'd go nuts...

Oddly enough, BBC world news rarely mentions her................
It's ok... She won't be around long at the current rate of decay.

I completely agree. I thought years ago that Jerry Springer was as low as this country could go when dumbing down to the masses, but it's only gotten worse. Jerry Springer's antics (and show that sold white-trash breeding at its finest) seems rather upstanding now.

I'm pretty sure the property taxes alone she pays fund a big chunck of the police force. There is finally some proposals in city council to limit the Paparazzi. In the last few years with the rise of internet celeb sites like TMZ and Perez Hilton, the Paparazzi have spawned like crazy and have become a real public hazard. They are going to kill someone - I see them all the time whipping around Malibu racing to get a shot of Britney or just about anyone buying a coffee at Starbucks (that's newsworthy?).

I'm sorry, I wasn't paying attention. Where you talking about BF.net?

Agreed...the celebs aren't the problem, it's the freakin' paparazzi. I realize with fame and $$ come the public eye, but it's gotten pretty ridiculous. I know I wouldn't want to get off of a transatlantic flight and be instantly attacked by those morons (and that is EVERY time they fly). I'm not sure giving up having any kind of normal life is worth those millions of $$

Yes, but remember, the paparazzi are the celebrities' "friends" when they want to be publicized in some way (especially when promoting a film or trying to kick-start a waning career). I feel that you can't have it both ways (not that every celebrity courts the paparazzi trash for their own betterment, but a LOT of them do...until they cry, "I want my privacy!") Britney Spears has been diagnosed with Bipolar Disorder (at least if you believe the media), so there is some of that behavior beyond her control, but some of it has been her purposely inviting the paparazzi along to keep herself out there in the public's eye. Now that it is being revealed that she really needs help, there is this rush to protect her privacy...with a $25,000 price tag attached (no, I don't believe her property taxes covered that fee). Someone did pay for it, however, and it is just my opinion that it was unnecessary. One ambulance with one police escort would have sufficed. That's all you or I would have gotten (if I was lucky. Hell, they would have likely just cuffed me and thrown me in the back of a police car like they did my sister a year and a half ago).

The caravan was necessary not only for the safety of Britney, but for the safety of others as well. It has been witnessed and documented that some members of the paparrazi will stop at no end to get "the shot," and have often driven on the wrong side of the road, disobeyed traffic laws, etc. in aggressive pursuit, putting not only Britney, but other motorists on the road in grave danger.
As someone who is saddened by all this not because of a star's fall from grace, but mostly because of the lack of a stable situation for the children involved, I really hope she can take advantage of the time spent in treatment and work to piece herself together for not only herself, but for those who genuinely care about and are invested in her.

Yes, but it was pointed out that in the case of one of her recent court appearances, there was an entrance that she could have arrived in where the paparazzi would not have been able to harrass her. For the first court appearance, she didn't utilize it and arrived in front of the court house. For the second one, she did. My point being - I'm sure there could have been a plan devised that would have gotten her from her home to the hospital without the paparazzi even knowing (they can move the President of the United States without people knowing, I'm sure they can figure out how to move a pop star). Another option would have been to close her street down. Regardless, $25,000 seems excessive.

Simple fix............Ms Spears must reimburse the City of LA for the excess cost over what a (non "Im a celeb") mentally ill patient transport costs!!

You're on Weight Watchers, determined to to fill your stomach only with good things, yes? Yet this drivel is junk food for the brain. Very very bad for you. The more you ponder the latest celebrity trainwreck, the more your synapses get sluggish and bloated.

LMAO at the righteous outrage over 25k.
Though, true to the subject line, only in L.A. would anyone be myopic enough to fixate on such a relatively trivial chunk of change.

I don't think it's about 25k. It's about special treatment. Anybody else would have been handcuffed and thrown in the back of a black and white to be driven to the hospital. The question is, why does Ms. Spears warrant such a large escort? You or I would not get that treatment.

That's a good point, efficiency.
Her special treatment doesn't make sense.
I go back and forth with it. In the larger sense, it's OK, but as you said, you or I would not warrant the same treatment.
Sigh.
Question: If you were in control, what would you have done? (Sorry if that's a goofy question; I've been asking myself the same thing. Honestly? I just don't know.)
