it will cost more to maintain that system than any benefit they get out of it
well, the only benefit they are probably concerned with is looking green, thus attracting more students; they probably don't even care about its effectiveness.

my university is remodeling their Rec Center and are connecting the treadmills and stationary bikes to the building's power; they intend it to lower the electrical costs, even though it's not that much.

Yep again...just think...if people were walking and riding their bikes on a daily basis they wouldn't even need the workout center.;)

Somehow this reminds me of a segment of Living with Ed where Ed hooked up a gizmo to his stationary bike so that he could make some toast. He would get up in the morning and spent 20 minutes generating the juice... so to speak.
For me, I woiuld soon come to the conclusion that plain, untoasted bread was good enough.
