Singlespeed & Fixed Gear - 3 helmet choices

if you had to choose between the giro makai, 661 mullet, or azonic skid lid for just riding around, which would you choose and why?

interesting choice of helmets. i think pictures would help.

i prefer to look like a dork so i'd opt for a traditional looking bike helmet (with the eleventy billion vents). of the three above, the 661 and azonic remind me of my snowboarding helmets. i'd go for the giro sans flames. haha.

I love my Makai. The fit is weird though. I find that even though I usually wear a large helmet, the Makai fits great in size small with no pads installed.

Unless you enjoy being soaked in sweat from riding down the block I'd just recommend a normal style cycling helmet.

If people are going to think a helmet looks lame, they're going to think any helmet looks lame. Buy a standard helmet in a color you like and you'll probably be happier in the long term, it'll have better ventilation, be lighter weight, and you'll be able to go to any bike shop to try them on and see what one fits you best (one of the most important parts).

I'm just looking at other options. also, I'm trying to avoid pointy-in -the back helmet. I'm considering a few traditional options as well, but any of the above are ~20 bucks, so I figure what the hell, for a knockaround helmet.

I like the mullet because it looks the most low key. I have never used any of those helmets though so my opinion is worth nothing. They would probably be really nice in cold weather but not so much in hot weather.

what about the Bell Metropolis? it's cheap and doesn't have the pointy back. you can also remove the visor. it does have that commuter look though, haha.

the makai, except with a flame job that doesn't look like it was done by a 8th grader with his first magic marker set. :D

the other two kinda look dorky in a "short bus" kinda way, although I'm sure they'll all do a good job of protecting yer melon in a spill.

I run my copy (yes, I made the entire thing) of a vintage italian speed skate helmet with a polycarb face shield for wet weather riding (I have to wear glasses) which is removable and a small visor replaces it during fairer weather.

to be honest I rarely wear a helmet during day to day transpo on the FG, because when I ride my motorcycle or when I'm out riding drops and jumps on the MTB I ALWAYS wear one.

the pro-tec have a much lower profile, too...

but if you live in fla i would go with a standard road helmet, for the superior ventilation and lightness.

I want one of those little kid helmets with cartoon characters on them. Anyone know where I can get one in adult sizes?

I don't know what kind of foam those helmets have, but you should definitely consider comparing their impact resistance to "traditional" bike helmets. I say this because I once did a number on my head while wearing a Pro-Tec skate helmet.

The only thing you're really paying for are vents and style, the latter being where the majority of the premium is. I doubt that the $230 Giro Ionos is any safer than the $30-40 Giro helmets.
