"The 33"-Road Bike Racing - Raced today (2/2/08)

The stunning weather helped convince a lot of people came to play. It was 70 and not a cloud in the sky.

We counted a dozen people who are paid to ride their bikes, and at least two former national champions in the field. And then me, a lowly old fat guy who's just honored to be playing with some of these guys.

The large prime selection kept the pace brutal; I'm still hearing bells. It was the fastest average for the series.

I finished in the pack.

3rd race. lucky bastard.

That B race was something else. From what I heard, it was squirrelly in the back the whole way. I nearly got taken out on the last lap by some guy clipping a pedal just in front of me. I was eighth or so going into the second to last turn, feeling fresh, ended up in the grass, kept upright, finished near last. I at least saw it coming the way people were going into the corner, so I was able to try to get a little wide in anticipation.

Dude, there were 63 guys in your field, that was a great turnout for that race.

Also, thanks again for YOUR HELP and congrats on the CF cage! And for that matter, congrats on doing so well in your first few races! I take it you've been bit by the bug and you'll be going to the downtown race next weekend (it's on Sunday)?

Talk to me again in August when the heat and humidity has the temps here hovering in the low hundreds with heat indexes in the one-teens range.. When it gets like that, all we can manage is to go out for an easy spin in the morning then come home to drink some :beer: and watch football.

Just a small thought - if you think a corner is going to be decisive, you want to stay on the inside of the corner. This is because when people crash, their momentum will generally carry them outside.

additional thought...

when riding the course for a warm up, ride the corners with different entries at speed. If all your warm up time was entering the corner at the center, and esasest entry point at speed, and you need to enter at a steeper angle, you will know you can do it and won't brake or slow because your angle and feel are much different.
