I just watched Cloverfield, and the best part about it was the preview for the new Star Trek movie preceding it. The Blair Witch-style camera gimmick didn't work as well as just showing stuff like in a regular movie. Note to Hollywood: It is very hard for those of us in "Flyover Country" to root for Manhattan metrosexuals who look like they stepped out of an iPod ad. We gave you guys the benefit of the doubt after 9/11 for a bit, but it is much more fun to watch monsters eat those people than to want them to survive. Also, show more skin, because it's a horror movie, not the aforementioned iPod ad. Give me horny redneck teens in a cabin in the woods and a werewolf.

It wasn't too terrible, but not worth 9 dollars. I give it one crankarm down.

Next up-There Will Be Blood

DOn't they have matinee showings at the bat cave? I thought it was fun and worth the $6.25 matinee price, but I sat too close and got a headache.

No Country For Old Men comes out on DVD Tuesday. Buy it and thank your gods it came out before you died. It was phenomenal, and if you watch close you'll catch the reference to The Hudsucker Proxy, (I went to see it three times in the theatre, 'nuff said.

Still haven't caught There will be Blood.

I've heard from somebody who saw it that it was even much better (!) - than the ''No Country..''

..btw, did you read the book? .. Did you see the end coming when it did? .. I wasn't even paying attn to what dood (TLJ) was saying when the screne cut to black! .. I had to piece together my recollection of his recollection of that dream from teh periferial memory.. which I was only able to do once I had gotten over the shock of the abrupt ending! ..WTF?! .. Guess they were trying to make the ending fit in with the 'randomness'/ true-to-life character of the plot. But dood.. I DEMAND RESOLUTION!! In movies -- as well as in 'real life'!!

30 Days of Night

It was pretty good but, I do not often say this, could've been a bit longer. Seemed like an enjoyable beginning tacked onto an enjoyable ending. Best vampire flick I've seen in quite a long time. It is my theory that Ann Rice has polluted vampire literature and movies. She's made them into romantic anti-heroes so all the fat, female shut-ins who read her stuff will get all wet in the loins, but I remember a day when men where men and Van Helsing was played by old, ugly men who put stakes through those ****er's hearts, by God, not cuddle with them.

These vampires were not prone to soliloquize, were ugly, powerful and unlikeable. As it should be.

Also, no Tom Cruise.

I sat here for, like, 2 minutes, then started to look it up in the IMDB because i couldn't remember the name:

Michael Clayton So I guess that tells you something. Okay movie, Great performances, but I've seen this story about a dozen times and there wasn't any new, exciting "twist" that made this any better. For the actors involved I can see why they were nominated, everyone was good, but how it was up for best picture I'll never know. That guy who was schizo in this one and was the mafia boss in Batman Begins is pretty excellent.

I rented American Gangster, and while any self-respecting member of Gen-X has seen every single cliche' in this movie done better in better movies, it was still far superior to Michael Clayton. I've got a cousin named Clayton, and maybe one day I'll post about it, and I guarantee you it will be far more enjoyable to read than watching Michael Clayton.

Boxing Helena Oh lord Jesus don't anyone rent this film. Just because it's David Lynch's daughter and/or because it seems like an intriguing snuff film is not reason enough.

Be warned:

If you decide you like this movie, you will have to explain to your friends that it was not because Christina Ricci was half-naked or naked throughout the entire film, nor was it because you have some even weirder chained-up-by-old-black-man fetish. Also, it has Justin Timberlake, which you'll also have to apologize for.

Best to leave this one alone.

Call me a perv if you will, but sometimes that's enough for me. I rented Skyscraper 13 years ago for Anna Nicole's bouncy bits - it was the best part of the movie.

You really can't argue with success.. can you.

It really doesn't matter whether we are infested with giant predatory insects from another dimension, or over-run with zombies, or up against hordes of unruly muslims in Iraq - America always pwns in the end .. we find a way.

Yeah, I think you're right. :)

Flawless Starring Michael Cain and Demi Moore. You need to see this one Pistofferson, it might hold a few surprises even for a seasoned movie buff such as yourself. It was so nicely filmed, and beautifully acted by Cain and Moore. The only down side to the film is that we don't see Demi's boobs, ask for a dollar off the ticket price for this reason, see what they say;):D

Anyway, two thumbs up.

I liked No Country..., but each appearance of the Anton Chigurh character seemed
to fill me with more dread. By the time of his final scene with Carla Jean, I could barely
watch.

Another creepy hit man is Joe Don Baker's character Mr. Molly in Charlie Varrick. This
is worth renting if you've never seen it.

X-Files. If you liked the show...Wait 'til it comes out on video anyway. It was like a long episode of the show, but was not without it's charms. Can't really say much about it or you ruin the not-very-complex plot. Meh.

But I've seen Darknight twice and pooped myself both times. Can't beat that awesome Watchmen preview beforehand, either. To tell you the truth, the first time I saw it, that trailer sort of overpowered Batman's exploits. I really, really, really love Watchmen, as a matter of fact my first user name on this forum was Dr. Manhattan a million years ago.

Okay, so Stepbrothers apparently got crappy reviews, when I went to Rottentomatoes.com and it seems like every reviewer was expecting this movie to be Terms of Endearment or The Maltese Falcon which it surely is not. What it is is freakin' funny, especially if you were to smoke a J or drink a six pack beforehand. :innocent:

I'm sorry, you can't judge horror, sci-fi, super hero and comedy by the same criterion as you did The English Patient, (which is cool because The English Patient, completely blew.)

Just went to see Hancock and The Pineapple Express.

Hancock was pretty good. I am a Wil Smith fan and he does a good job of picking movies to be in. This is sort of a different take on a superhero movie, and Charlize Teron is just so smokin' hot and boobalicious.

Pineapple Express achieved something I never thought could be done, they made a stoner movie that wasn't funny. I've seen most of them, with everyone from Method Man and Redman to Cheech and Chong, and generally you don't have to be high to enjoy them. This one, I'd say it would be the only way you'd enjoy it.

What does it cost to go to the movies in Seppotania? It costs about the equivalent $13-14US out here in Oz.

9 dollars for the ticket, and about 12 dollars for just popcorn and coke. Motorcycle helmets are really good for sneaking stuff in, though.

Why do you have to sneak it in?

I remember this being an issue in Australia a few years ago and it turned out that movie theatres could not stop you bringing in your own food or drink unless they had a 'safety' reason for doing so. Otherwise, they were contravening competition laws, ie they were acting as a illegal monopoly.

I read somewhere the other day that some movie theatres (in UK or Oz I think) were banning popcorn.

Most of them, and restaurants too, have signs saying "no outside food or drink." That's fine if you are being charged a reasonable price for a Coke, but sodas are $4.50 at the theater down the street from me! I sat and calculated the profit margin from the price of syrup and carbonation for Cokes at a dollar a piece a few years ago, and it's through the roof, probably one of the more profitable things restaurants sell, but $4.50? And then I read that the movie companies are having a "disappointing summer" or whatever. Kind of sickening.

Restaurants I can understand.

Popcorn and coke and the big earners for movies houses. The only thing I usually buy is an ice cream.

Studios charge a boat load of money for the films themselves, so when you pay $10 a ticket, the theater company might make pennies. They make all their profit on the concessions. I might buy some Reese's Pieces, but that's it. The prices are through the roof!

And No Country For Old Men, I liked it, but I'm still a little confused 3 months later.

You have to think more theme-wise than plot-wise. The way it addressed themes like justice, chance, good and evil and whacked you in the face with a whole new, brave, unflinching view of them was just brilliant.

"And then I woke up." Gives me chills.

Kris, did you get to see There Will Be Blood yet?Yes, it was awesome. Thought I mentioned it in this thread already. I really liked Magnolia which kind of bombed and was hoping Anderson would hit his next one out of the park, which he did. The other Anderson (Wes) I like seems to be becoming a self-parody if The Darjeeling Limited is any indication.

I watched The Godfather for the first time today. I'm still kind of in shock.I watched it for the first time in 2000, and I was so used to people going on about it and being taken aback that I hadn't seen it, but then I did and I saw what all the hype was about and how most mob movies stole a whole lot from it. Pacino's Scarface was the one I thought was dumb and over-rated, although apparently every black person in America disagrees with me. :thumb:
