Folks,

I've had foot pain with my recumbent for a good bit of last year and have come to the conclusion that I need a bit more room for toe out. I am going to order some Kneesavers, but can't figure out what the standard size (1/2" or 9/16") threads for the pedals are. Any help?
Also any experience with Kneesavers?

the 1/2 inch are for the old one piece Ashtabula cranks on old Schwinns and Huffy's.

I had my shop put some on. They are the difference between riding and not riding for me.

Thanks guys. I thought it was 9/16. I want to get these ordered ASAP so I can get my bike in the shop and ready for opportunistic riding.

Where are you ordering from? I was riding with stevesurf the other day and we both noticed how my feet were too wide for the pedals and were slipping off, thought maybe those would give me a bit more room for my feet.

I had that problem too. Get them, Air.

So what size, between 20 to 30 mm, would make the spacing more like, e.g., a mountain bike instead of a road bike? :)

P.S., Anyone who knows, please feel free to correct me but, my guess is that the 20-25-30 mm extenders must be an overall measure, e.g., choosing 25 would result in an increased Q-factor of 25 mm, i.e., by moving each pedal out 12.5 mm. It does not seem possible that, e.g., a 30 mm Kneesaver is 30 mm at each foot, which would be an increase in the Q-factor of 60 mm. My understanding is that the differences in the Q-factor between road and mtb cranks is about 24-30 mm.

I have super wide feet and have that same problem! Being that we are clydes, won't the weight being farther away from the crank arm be really bad (i'm 280)?

Yeah - I'm 13EEEE. I thought that would be a problem too - hopefully not!

You'll have to let me know. I'm a 15EEEE. Sucks doesn't it? Thank god there's new balance though! :)

While we are on the whole big feet thing, I have 16-17 D's. Not as wide as some of you, but I sure do wish it was indicative of other gifts. :P

g - you know at first I thought that what would better suit you would be something that would keep your feet at a natural angle, but this would probably be bad! I think you need to try these and see if your motion can be more parallel to the plane of the frame itself. This is why clipless with a great deal of float (I believe) will also help, together with the extenders.

Of course, I'm no orthopedist, and this is where professional fitting excels!

Hey, I know this is a couple month old thread, but, N, what size did you get installed. Where they the $45 dollar jobs from Scor?

They were an 11 dollar part from my shop's supplier. I don't recall the size, unfortunately. They are out of stock of them for now, so I only have the one pair. I need a second pair to get the Navigator, or the bike that replaces the Navigator, on the road.

If anyone finds some other than from scor, I'd love to try them. I'm a bit duckfooted w/ size 12 feet, and have often lamented how close the pedals are to the stays. However, the kneesavers scor advertises do not work w/ pedals that require allen wrenches, like my candy's.

To answer my own question, it looks like Peter White has some that can accomodate allen wrenches here (http://www.peterwhitecycles.com/pedalspacers.asp).

Anyone tried them?

Unfortunately, it's the same issue still. Candy's don't have flat spots for a pedal wrench.

The Allen Hex point in the pedals are inside the knee savers, if you know what I mean. To answer my own question, it looks like Peter White has some that can accomodate allen wrenches here (http://www.peterwhitecycles.com/pedalspacers.asp).

Am I right in my understanding that kneesavers are a brand of pedal extenders? If so, is there anything particularly good (materials, geometry, reliability, etc.) that is better about the kneesavers brand than the no name ones I always see on ebay?

I got an email from Scor and the guy said you can use the allen wrench pedals by using some vice grips with some protection material on the pedals to install. I'd rather not. Will be looking at the PW version. I sent PW an email to see if they have a hole all the way through as it does not look like it to me.

Does anyone here use or tried orthodics? Unless some is also adding hip problems, these devices are attempting to correct pronation or supination?

jaxgtr

My issue would be the supination. I noticed the other day when riding my road bike that my foot really sits somewhat on the outside of the pedal. I have positioned the cleats as far to the inside of the shoe as possible as to try and bring my foot away from the bike, but it still does not allow my foot to sit flat on the pedal. I don't have this issue on my hybrid or mtb.

Hey, just a follow up on this. I got a set of the extenders 18mm off ebay from a guy in Seattle and they are great. He has a local machine shop make them from stainless steel and bonus, they were only $17 with free shipping and not $45. Best thing about them, I no longer have the foot pain. YEA

Don't worry about the kneesaver length. I got them and stopped the rubbing against the crank with my foot. They typically say 20 mm is best, which is about 3/4" and 25 is just under 1 inch (I got 25mm for my Sun EZ-1) If you dont like the size, and don't beat them up, the owner of the comapny will swap with you for the price of postage only. Just ask! Just besure you order what fits your crank (most bents take 9/16" I hear)
