Road Bike Racing - "World Champion"

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.
Is anyone besides me just a little bit uncomfortable with the idea that the "World Champion" gets that title by winning one race?
There is the "World Cup", which comprises many different races.
Or perhaps add the results of the Giro, Tour, and Vuelta together in some way (though the ability of the race manager/dictator to exclude teams at will would make that a bit more problematical).
But one race?
Cheers...Gary

But doesn't the selection to enter the race come from somewhere - they don't have any old charlie turn up at the start line.
Also as you point out there already is the World Cup series. If they alter the world championship they'd just be reproducing the world cup.

Thi sis an old issue.
That is why we have the World Cup Champion that wears its respective jersey.
Besides as the gentleman above posted. The riders are picked and not drawn at random.
It is very hard to pull it off on one event. I belive it is fair this way. The best man wins out of the best in the world. Tactics and fitness comes into play in one day.
No having a bad day and making it up on another event.

In most cases course is so challenging that the best wins anyway, until those three last year with pack sprints.

The world championship is the only major, annual UCI event in which cyclists race by national team. The world cup rates the best riders on the best trade teams over a series of races; the WC rates the best riders from the best national teams. Different kettle of fish.
