You can only have admiration for a guy who faced his MS with such a degree of acceptance as he expressed here

He's a true legend in the cycling world, and the world is certainly a poorer place for his loss. :(

Here's to perfect weather and tailwinds in Heaven. I'll see you when I get there, Sheldon!

That's too sad.

I don't think the cycling community has been hurt this bad since the passing of Ken Kifer.

Sheldon was a wonderful man. He'll be missed.

My sincerest condolences to his family; his relatives, his family at Harris, and the cycling community at large who regarded him as a father figure.

Through his knowledge, his spirit will live on...

What I always admired was that he would take time for other cyclists... whether here or personally in email... if you went to his site and just asked questions.

He truly promoted cycling.

Yup. He did and maybe what we can do is try to do a little bit of what he did.

I know I will. I should have done it more before his passing, but because of what he did for me personally, I'll pass it on to others

And as late as a month or so ago he was still providing advice about equipment purchases; he did so for me. I send my condolences to his family and friends; and the cycling community has lost a strong advocate.

One of the greatest true advocates, who did it just by loving being in the saddle. He will be missed.

I didn't want to believe this.

Great sense of humor, great knowledge, great experience. Sheldon Brown figured stuff out so we didn't have to.

There's nothing fair about life. It is just some bizarre accident that we are here at all. Get out there and ride while the ridin's good.

Damn, that's too bad....he had quite a large amount of influence on the bike scene.

Kind of inappropriate, but I wonder what becomes of his site now? Will someone take the information and put it onto their own so that it stays alive, will someone take over his site and update it to keep it alive, or does it go away eventually as he is no longer there to tend it?

Sad. He was a veritable fountain of bicycle knowledge, and went well out of his way to share what he knew.

My condolences.

Condolences to Sheldon's family and friends.

He will be greatly missed. A guy who was riding a fixed gear before it was cool. His web page is an inspiration to all of us who know people with MS, as well as a great bike resource.

My condolences to his family and friends.

Although we never met, Sheldon always had sage advice and kind words in public and private correspondence.

He will greatly missed.

If Harris Cyclery sets up some type of memorial I hope they will notify this forum.

very sad news.

Harris Cyclery is my LBS and I am sure this is a tough day for all of them there. Sheldon was about 10 years my senior and I remember him as a local legendary figure and fount of cycling know how from when I was a kid. He was also active in other endeavors, like the Revels celebrations (http://sheldonbrown.com/org/revels/), his sense of being a part of a community and a resource for others extended well beyond the world of cycling- it's amazing how much energy he had and how many people he touched. It's a real loss.

May he rest in peace.

Condolences to the family. He will be missed.

Although I did not know him personally, we had a few e-mail exchanges over the years. It's following one of these exchanges on wheelbuilding that I translated that webpage in French – with his blessing, I must add. Over the years, I translated a few other ones, but I would need at least one century to catch up with his entire website.

I wonder if there will be any concerted effort by cyclists, since so many of us knew him from his contributions to our lives, to honor him and celebrate his life and work. Or have I missed something already?

RIP. Just awful. He really was a great person.

His blog was active up until February 3. He was even thinking about voting! Even though it was inevitable, it must nevertheless have come as a shock.

It was easy to see Sheldon loved bicycles, travel, music, Harris Cyclery and most of all his own family. His practical intellect and ability to communicate clearly for the benefit the recipient are gifts to us all. Thank you Sheldon!

My memories of Sheldon have been expressed in C&V. And now here, I guess.

I've learned so much from Sheldon's site over the years. In fact, I was on his site on February 3, trying to figure out a braking question for my Gitane. I'll never forget the time I posted something on C&V about steel, and Sheldon corrected me-- it was such a thrill to have Sheldon Brown setting me straight! Sheldon was truly one of a kind, and will be sorely missed.

I'm posting here now to let people know that a memorial ride is being planned in Portland for April 1st (http://bikeportland.org/2008/02/06/memories-and-a-memorial-ride-for-sheldon-brown/), in remembrance of Sheldon's annual April 1st messages. Hopefully, an April 1st ride will be held wherever Sheldon had fans, and hopefully, a Sheldon Brown memorial ride will become an annual event.

If you appreciated Sheldon's advice, humor, and generosity with both over the years, and a ride isn't being planned in your town, please consider helping to organize one.
