In April, Sheldon Brown wrote in response to a suggestion that I get different length crank arms for my bike:
Actually, that's not true.
Built-up shoes, spacers and the like change the Effective Saddle Height (ESH) but have no effect on the leverage (Gain Ratio.)
Going to a shorter crank increases the Gain Ratio, so the shorter leg has to push harder on the pedal. Since the shorter leg is also usually the weaker leg, mixing crank lengths is not the best way to approach a leg length discrepancy.

And I wrote:
Oh my! The man himself has visited this thread! I'm not worthy! I'm not worthy!
I'm still not worthy. I always intended to thank Mr. Brown for his website articles. I found them tremendously helpful, even if as a beginner I didn't understand much of them. Unfortunately my thanks will have to be given here, after his passing. RIP Sheldon.
This is so sad. I had always hoped to go and meet him and buy a SanJos8.
He really made a difference to a lot of folks, and made biking more enjoyable for thousands.
Is there any movement to maybe set up a charity ride in his honor? I'd be happy to be part of that.
