I have a Kona Paddy Wagon frame coming in for my new build. What cranks? I have some old school Soviet track cranks but I feel they won't look slick w/ a modern frame..

Should I pony up the cash for the Sugino 75? Should I go with Miche? Should be funny and get some BMX cranks?

Whatcha got?

I'm actually somewhat tempted to do the bmx cranks ordeal..kinda do a "big bmx" bike thing w/ the paddy wagon..

Anyone know what the chainline ordeal would be like?

Euro, yes. That fits BSA shells like on most bikes today, including the beautiful Paddy Wagon.

I'm in the process of putting BMX cranks on one of my bikes, as I love some of the crazy designs of the BMX chainrings.

EDIT: posted this earlier today:

Chainline: I now have a solution for any chainline problem with my singlespeeds: instead of using a singlespeed hub and freewheel, I use a normal freehub on which I put those "singlespeed conversion" spacers and a BMX sprocket in whatever position the chainline falls. Result: no more problems with chainline, as I can accomodate nearly any chainline with the spacers on the freehub. And furthermore, freehubs last way longer than any freewheel, and are easier to service.

Ah, fixed. OK, forget the freehub solution, then. If you want a BMX crankset, you still have options to set up the chainline, with spacers at the BB (thin aluminium rings) and/or at the hub where you thread the cog/sprocket on - you can add a little spacer to push the sprocket a tad more to the driveside. Also, you can flip the sprocket, which can give you several mm to one side or the other. Also, spacers on the rear wheel axle can be moved to one or the other side of the hub, but then you should also re-dish the wheel to keep the centerline for the tyres.

Anyway, as I always say for chainline problems:

We need pictures of the cranks to make an informed decision.

Also, can't decide between a silver or black Cane Creek S6 headset, and whether or not to keep my silver Thomson seatpost.

I do kind of like the look of this crankset that's on the stock Paddy Wagon..

They ride just the same as any cranks. They are burlier than road or track cranks, but other than that they're identical in effect. And the chainrings as well: they function exactly the same and feel the same.

White Industries. Lighter than Pauls and comes in many color combos. My personal favorite and I am considering a silver on silver combo for my Pista.

Caveat: largest ring offered is only a 44T, in which case you'd need to run a 16T for 73 gear inches (optimal for me.)

don't get bmx stuff, I have a profile bmx crank on my jump bike and the q-factor is wide like horses' saddle.

wroomwroomoops
02-05-08, 02:06 PM
^^^My FSA BMX cranks have less Q-factor than the ones I had on one of my singlespeeds up until recently (I can't measure the Q-factor on cranks I still have on bikes, so I had to use these that are off).

It depends on the cranks.
