What a great forum. I had a bit of a look last night. There's a wealth of knowledge here, and lots of opinion. I'll get a bit active here, perhaps.
Here's a bit about me: 56 year old Male, recently retired from teaching, (semi really, retirement is boring), I've done a few trips, have long been an all weather all season bicycle commuter for lots of years. (12 or 13 miles each way) We only get a bit of frost here.
I live in the southern part of Oz, on the Murray River bounding the states of NSW and Victoria. My trips, so far have been to Tasmania (did the Trail, then back up the East coast) I've been around a bit on the Rail trail network in Northeastern Victoria. I'm not hard core and have done this on either an old rigid MTB with no specialised gear, or my old (1955 model) BSA Champ - an ex elite training bike. an oldie but goodie. All self contained, camp everywhere stuff.
I recently placed an order for a Surley LHT. Forgot to specify the colour. Doesn't really matter. It'll be the first bit of specialized touring gear for me and I'm excited about it. I'll just get it, and see how it goes before I change anything. I've got a contract which will run for another 6 weeks, and then I'll be off, further afield, poking around the hills in Northeastern Victoria for a month or two, maybe go over the top at Mt Hotham and up the coast a bit to Mallacoota, do some fishing, before returning to another job I'll have in the snowfields over winter. I haven't thought much about next spring, Maybe Tasmania again. Tassie reminds me so much of the old country - I once lived in Minnesota.
There it is, a little abut me. I'd be happy to answer any queries abut things that I know about, and places I've been, either on the bike or car travelling. My touring is probably a little more open ended now than what it used to be, and these days, I'm looking to just getting out and being a bit feral for a month or two at a time from now on.
