I need to help a friend swap out a wore out 8spd cassette. Is there a site that provides instruction on basic maintenance? Simple stuff like swapping a cassette, taking on/off a chain, derailer, that sort of thing?

Chris, I'm pretty sure one of the Mods will move your post over to the section titled "Bicycle Mechanics". In addition to answers for specific questions, links have been provided for PDFs of Barnett's manual.
I've found the section invaluable as I learn about my bike.

Chris - look in the first thread in the Mechanics forum. You will find Barnett's there. It will tell you all you need to know for this.

Ah, starting to DIY, huh? It rocks. Get ready to shell out the cash for your tools, but it'll save you a ton over time. Especially if you take advantage of the Barnett's manuals. They're great.

Thanks. Didn't know there was a mechanics forum. Duh! I wish I would have known that a few weeks ago when I took my shifters apart and had to take a box of parts back to my LBS with shame on my face!

thanks guys!

lol! We all have learned some bike lessons the hard way. Hey, that might make a good thread.

Wow, were they STI shifters? I'm pretty sure that was lots of fun to get yourself out of.

Yeah I decided to buy new bullhorns and aerobars. I eventually figured how to get the STI's off, but couldn't figure out the cables. I did so much more work than needed. I got things back together at one point... sorda, but I couldn't get them to shift, couldn't brake, etc. Then I ended up cutting the cable to short, then I couldn't turn (in addition to not being to brake) and almost wrecked. I took them on and off about 8 or 10 times then some spring shot out. At that point, I grabbed the box my bars came in (couldn't get the play out of my fork either) threw everything in it, and drove everything to the shop. They all got a good laugh at me.
