Commuting - Do you ever get sick?

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.
I don't remember the last time I've gotten sick and I wonder if bike commuting and all the exercise I get is beneficial to keeping the immune system healthy. It's not like I'm a complete germ freak or live in a bubble but I don't recall ever having to use a sick day because I am truly sick.
Since I'm an avid hiker and backpacker, when I'm not biking to work or out on the road, I am usually hiking so I am always active... I wish I could sell my sicktime to others or perhaps trade then in for vacation time..

Since I went vegan 6 years ago I've only been sick once. Healthy habits definitely help the immune system. I was just thinking how simply riding to work every day is a lot more exercise than most people get. I'm sure it helps keep us healthy!

Surprisingly, I've actually had two illnesses this year. That is two more than last year and two too many.
Not often, but when I do I just ride at a slower pace.

I haven't been sick in so long I can't remember but don't tell my boss that I still use my sick days anyway.

I have been feeling really good lately, but my doc is pestering me to go get another MRI. I say leave well enough alone!!
I got sick once after I skied into a cabin last New Years, but I blame that on some really bad food that I ate, I was sick for maybe 20 minutes and then threw up and was fine after that. Other then that, over the last, at least, three years or so, the only time I've ever felt sick was because I was hung over. I've never missed work or school because I was sick in the last three years.
Oh, and I do get runny noses every now and then.

A few winters ago. (5 i think) i was running a lot and getting colds one after the other. i started to drink green tea every day. i have only gotten two colds since then. When i start to feel one coming on i double up on the tea and vitamins and usually fend it off. Since i've been commuting regularly i have noticed my allergies have been acting up more. It must be from spending more time huffing and puffing outside each day. No complaints here. It’s a small price to pay to get to ride all the time.

Exercise can make you more disease resistant, or it can make you more disease prone. Balance is the key.
If you overdo it too often, you can weaken your immune sysem. If you stay balanced, you can be more resistant to sickness.

I haven't ridden for 2 weeks ( for various reasons) and now feel like crap - because I haven't been riding (guilt) plus I'm getting a cold (I've had a lot less colds since I've been riding)
Only the occasional stuffy nose here, Praise God!

There has only been 2 times in the past few years that ive been sick, both times it was Tonsolitis. The first time I had it, it only lasted a few days and was gone mostly by itself, the second time(this year) was more severe and kept me on light duties(both on and off the bike) for about 5 months or so. Otherwise though, in the 4 or so years that ive been bike riding daily, there has bee no illnesses worth reporting. I still take sick days but thats usually a recovery day after a big bike ride, but dont tell my boss that! ;)

many concepts of health are the highest form of sickness.
