I got one of my old friends into bicycling this summer. It's been great having a good friend to cycle with.

He is completely old school. While he wore his jeans and cotton shorts for bicycling, he teased me for my lycra tights.

He told his young teen daughter to stop him if he ever thought to wear tights.

I just got his Christmas present for him. Guess what it is; Yup, Lycra bicycle tights!

Well good luck getting him to actually wear them... :) I suppose he refuses to wear a helmet as well?

IMHO you'd be better off getting him some baggies instead. He may never wear the tights and they ain't cheap. He may be "retro" because he has never ridden with padded shorts and has never "felt" the benefits. He probably never will due to the style. I don't wear cycling clothing for the "fashion" I wear them for the "comfort". I hated walking around in some tights before and after the ride. I was always self concious that I was advertising my "man-hood". When baggies became popular, they were one of my immediate purchases. Your buddy may feel the same.

I also hate "team" jerseys, but I love the wicking quality of em. I bought a Fox jersey that's a poly-cotton blend and solid color (navy blue). I wish more jersey manufacturers would make solid colors in earth tones. I understand a bright yellow or neon green jersey for visibility, but please make some darker colors for us mtn bikers.

When I first began riding I refused to go bare under my cycling shorts. My mentor pretty much just smirked and stated "You'll learn." I said "I doubt it."
On our first 75 mile ride....I learned! Man did I learn! And I have gone bare under the shorts ever since.
Take him on a 75 mile plus trip, encourage him to wear his blue jeans, but make mention of the seams......after the trip he may be a believer. :p

Hey guys, my mom said I could never ever wear lycra, and I won that battle!! I think Mike will pull it off. Mike, recommend a "good" saddle to him,but secretly make it a "bad saddle" and then take him on a long "bike"ride, so he gets a bad saddle sore. Then tell him what his butt could feel like if only he would wear padded Lycra.

Congrats on recruiting a riding partner.

After a long ride ask him how his butt feels. ;)

When I started cycling in the mid 80s I wore cotton shorts. My butt and my inner thighs really suffered!!!
I eventually broke down and got some baggies and riding became enjoyable. Now all I own are lycra shorts and tights (for cold weather).

I agree. Maybe he has a hangup about the "feel" of lycra or wearing something as form-fitting as cycling shorts.
I think he'll wear the baggies because they look like regular shorts. But I too think he will come around and start wearing lycra. :D

My fears about going down the lycra route are the bulges that I'd rather not have rather than the bulges I would :D :o :D

Cotton shorts seem okay for my commute 13 - 14 miles at the moment but I'm going to have to get something more for the winter- maybe it's time for tights. Is there anywhere cheap that ships to the UK for less than astronomical costs?

Thanks Richard

Yeah, Fubar, good buddy, I was kinda movin' away from you on the bench, there. :D

The tights may not be that big a problem. He can always slip a pair of plain baggy shorts over them if he feels like he needs to. Otherwise just convince him they are no different from thermal underwear...only shiny.

Something tells me that the statement, "It's like riding around town in shiny thermal underwear!" won't mean much to a guy who refuses to wear lycra. :D

I know what a lot of you guys are saying about not being able to get my friend to actually wear lycra tights.

BUT...

You know how it is. There they are just sitting in the drawer AND he is going biking anyway AND his wife did say that his butt is still cute AND there just might be a reason that everybody is wearing them AND And and

Next thing you know, he's picking them up, then trying them on in front of the mirror, then noticing how they give him a good range of motion without binding THEN, he is on his bike heading out of the driveway while wearing his new tights.

Within a year, his tights are worn out and he is buying his own new pair.

Hey Mike,
I know how your buddy feels. When I started back riding I also told my coach and riding buddies I would never wear those tight funny shorts! Felt like folks with a little belly like me looked silly and should not subject the rest of you to that sight!! It took a couple of long rides and my "sensitive" parts going to sleep to realize I better do something. Yesterday I bought my first pair of long tights to wear over my shorts when it's cold and own about 5 or 6 of loud *** jerseys!! The more your buddy is around rides and riders the more curious he may become and he might just show up one day looking like a rider!! :)

C'mon, Mikey! We all know it's really about showing off that anatomy! (Let's tell it like it is...)

Well... Ya, of course.

Why else would a guy wear tights?!

I don't feel I can comment on fashion as today I wore a Fat City Cycles team top, a tasteful blend of fluo pink, lime green and white, with the emblem "FAT" clear for all to see.

I did hide it under my rain jacket tho' :)
