Eastern Canada - US Border Requirements : Kids on bikes

I intend on cycling with my kids this summer, 12 & 15, from Kingston to Cape Vincent. In addition to passports and birth certs., I've read that if one parent is taking a kid across then a notarized authorization slip from the other parent is required.
Anyone know if that rule holds true for a bicycle day trip? Anyone else have parent/kid issues at the border? I'm guessing the answer to the first is affirmative.
I mean, who would abscond/abduct their kid(s) on a bike? :o

I would really expect you'd need that slip, I've crossed at the same point before and the mounties tend to keep to a script no matter how you're crossing, they asked me if I was carrying any firearms and all I had was a saddlebag.

It's not the mounties you have to go through, it's the U.S. Border Patrol.Therefore it would be wise to do your homework and find out exactly what you need to enter the states and then get back into Canada with little or no hassles.A group of us cross at Cornwall every year and it goes easy when you are prepared in advance.One of the little perks is that on a bike you don't have to pay a bridge toll.

I have no idea if it's the same for biking.. But, we live 30 minutes from the Niagara Falls border, and my wife takes our 3 kids over shopping all the time (in the car).. Like 2 times a month. They've never asked for any special slip or note from me. Should be good with just Passports.

Hey, I when I was a single mom and travelled with my daughter to Florida, they asked me where her father was... It's a good thing I had the letter, 'cause they were really suspicious when I said he lived in England. They interogated my daughter to validate my story, and the letter. This was pre-911.
I say, just do it. You never know who you're going to encounter at the border or what kind of mood their in. Who wants the hassle?
