The Historian and I are planning a Pittsburgh to DC tour this summer. Since the trail isn't quite finished, we're goign to start riding at the trailhead in McKeesport. And I'm reliably informed that attempting to ride there from the city is for those with a deathwish.

We're looking at where to stay for the night before the ride starts, and I have no ideas if the roads around McKeesport are rideable. Anyone have a suggestion on areas we can stay in that will allow us to bike to the trailhead?

There's a hiker biker camping area within six miles of the trailhead near a cemetary. I don't recall if there is water at the site.

If you are traveling the Great Allegheny Passage to the C & O Towpath route there are websites with some info. Here is a link to the Allegheny Trail Alliance: http://www.atatrail.org/index.cfm
There are links to maps of each section and what there is around there. I beleive there are many hotels, B & Bs and campsites listed all along the route. I have been trying to get a bunch of guys together to make that ride but can't get anyone to seriously commit. Heard it was an excellent ride.

Neil's, I live about 40 miles from there, if you get in a jamb I maybe able to help you out. I have ridden some of the trail starting from Cedar Creek Park about 15 - 20 miles from Mckeesport. I know there is a Holiday Inn at the intersection of Rt. 51 and I 70 but that would mean back tracking 20 miles to start the ride. I found a motel on my streets and trips near the trail head in McKeesport called Larrys Hotel (412) 664-9491, but I don't know if it's a sleeze bag place or not, you could call and see if you can get a feeling for it. If you needed a ride from the Holiday Inn I could probably take you, depending on when it is.
