Mountain Biking - The specialized (warranty) story...

Hi all.

Its nice to be back after 3weeks offline.... :D:D:D

First of all, as most of you know i am a big Specialized fan, but here is an interesting story....

2001 Specialized Allu frames, limited lifetime warranty
2002 Specialized Allu frames, 5 years limited warranty
2003 Specialized Allu frames, limited lifetime warranty
2004 Specialized Allu frames, 5 years limited warranty.

ARE THEY NUTS? I am very happy with the company in general, but this warranty policy inconsistency is totally CRAP!!!!!

Share your opinions.

BTW, Curtiss: 5 yrs warranty including racing/bsx/jumps/DH/FR/Hucking and racing/competitive use, including headtube flaring.
Cove: Lifetime warranty on any kind of riding FR/DH/XC/DJ , plus crash replacement policy.

In 2003 they announced a lifetime warranty on all frames retroactive to the beginning. At least I'm covered.

I got a 2004 hardrock... How long am i covered for? And what am i covered against?

I also dont undersand why they waranties are different on different years... maybe u should email them :)

Unfortunately you got 5yrs on manufacturing/material defects. I dont know if the 5yrs thingy works backwards on previous years models... a specialized dealer told me that the current warranty policy affects every bike , any year...

This is still the answer they give in thier FAQ
For a period of time we went down to a 5 year warranty, but now we have decided to go back to a limited lifetime warranty on all frames. This warranty covers all older frames that were sold under the 5 year warranty change but is limited to covering the frames for manufacturer defects and is valid only for the original owner of the bicycle.
We noted that while other companies were dropping to 5 year, 1 year and 90 day warranties that their quality was dropping as well. We want to hold on to our following and let everyone know that we want to stand behind every bike we sell So now what do we believe? I know both of mine are covered for life but I don't know about the new ones according to this they should be fine.

My bike won't last 5 years...warranty is of no concern :)...I will likely have the bighit replaced within 2 or 3 years :)

It's been less than a year for me, and I believe my Bighit Comp frame is cracked....

But, from the pics you've posted here, I doubt the crack was due to "Manufacturers Defects" Abusive riding is NOT covered under the warranty! The price we pay to play!

Just curious how do you determine if it is manufacture defect or not? I can see if car hit obvious not or you crashed and big dent in the tube etc.. but otherwise..

I have never thought once about asking the company to give me a replacement in all the years I've been riding. How can they? it's only metal and I can beat the and will beat the hell out of it.

I've put a brand new pair of 140 dollar forks on and bent them the same day. it comes w/ the territory.

A mis-aligned frame would be considered a defect. A flaking powder coat paint job is a defect. A weld cracking is doubtful, a bent tube or rounded out headtube is abuse. Any corrosion or rust is lack of maintenance...etc.

Sure it's all a judgement call and I KNOW a lot of bikes replaced under warranty should NOT have been. It's always more of a publicity issue and dependent on how hard a shop will push the supplier for a customer.

L8R (Warrantied More Frames for customers than I should have!) My favorite was an OCLV that the guy was using for jumping! Can you say "Stupid"?
