View Full Version : Do You like Clowns?

I just read that most kids don't like clowns. I never did as a kid but I thought I was the only one. They were always around "fun"-on a bike in the circus, handing out animal balloons, popping out of rain barrels at the rodeo.

I still don't get the appeal.

It didn't help that there was that famous mass murderer guy who was also a clown...I forget his name.

So are clowns kind of like fruitcake? Does anybody really like them?

Reminds me of a song on a Judy Collins CD I have.

"Where are the clowns, there ought to be clowns."

Don't remember who wrote it. I used to know. I must be getting old.

Mimes are at least...you know...artistes...;)

I don't recall being scared of Marcel Marceau...

I don't hate clowns and mimes. They are simply NOT entertaining.

Well...I'm still looking for somebody who likes 'em. Don't be shy. Having an unpopular opinion is OK...:D

How's about some clownarchy (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cX44jkKIsXs)?

Thanks to this thread, and doing a little Wikisurfing, I ended up on the most creative 404 message I've yet seen.

Something good came of this thread! Amazing. Thank you.

So does that mean you like clowns? :D

I'm hurt, though. Don't like my thread? Clowns a worn out topic?

(Hey-they do ride bikes...I know weak, but...)

What can I say it's been slow around here lately. I blame the Superbowl...

I used to work for a clown... a real clown... make-up and all.

He was a nice guy.

I never had an issue with clowns until I watched "It" - now I understand why they give people the creeps. It's the whole "concealed identity" and playing with children for a living thing.

What if the mime was Robin Williams? He does a pretty good one...he's a cyclist, also...

Didn't mean to hurt you.
I don't like clowns, but I don't hate them. Their humor is, well, lacking. I do find them to be a little scary, however. Strange though - only with clowns in North America (US/Canada, specifically). Clowns in Europe have been delightful (but still not entirely funny). Clowns in Eurasia are different, and have different m.o. Clowns in South America are different as well (closer to European clowns).

It's the US/Canadian Clowns that I find disturbing.

I have yet to see a clown that I find funny (this has been the case throughout my life).

NO. The "It" pic says it all.

I had a friend who volunteered as a clown in children's wards. I stayed the hell away from him when he was volunteering.

I have the t-shirt that says:

Can't Sleep... Clowns will eat me...

but I like clowns, or should I say that I don't mind clowns because I would never go out of my way to go to see a clown, except for Buskerfest in Denver when hundreds of different clowns/mimes/acrobats perform on one street.

OK...so I was thinking about Robin Williams...and how he's kind of a "cycling mime" or ex-mime and that he has over 100 bicycles!

So he's like the Jay Leno of the bike world..

I wonder what kind of bikes he has. Does anyone know?

That makes me feel like I need a few more..:D

:D ...may have helped plant the seed...that's a good one. I always enjoy the commercials more than the game.

Cirque de Soleil has entertaining clowns, but they are not slapstick like the ones we are used to seeing here in the US.. I find traditional clowns creepy.. but the Cirque clowns were done very funny and engaging..

When I was a wee lass, I somehow wound up on the local (yes, that would be Southern California) Bozo the Clown show.

I don't remember being frightened of him, or any other clown. I'm not overly impressed by clowns because I don't find them amusing, but they don't frighten me.

Originally from the 1973 Broadway musical, A Little Night Music
Music and Lyrics by Stephen Sondheim
This version taken from Barbra Streisand's 1985 album, The Broadway Album

Isn't it rich, are we a pair?
Me here at last on the ground,
You in mid-air.
Send in the clowns.

Isn't it bliss, don't you approve?
One who keeps tearing around
One who can't move
Where are the clowns?
Send in the clowns.

Just when I'd stopped opening doors,
Finally knowing the one that I wanted was yours.
Making my entrance again with my usual flair,
Sure of my lines;
No one is there.

Don't you love farce?
My fault I fear,
I thought that you'd want what I want,
Sorry my dear
But where are the clowns
There ought to be clowns
Quick send in the clowns

What a surprise!
Who could foresee
I'd come to feel about you
What you felt about me?
Why only now when I see
That you've drifted away?
What a surprise...
What a cliche'...

Isn't it rich, isn't it queer
Losing my timing this late in my career
And where are the clowns
Quick send in the clowns
Don't bother, they're here.

If you are old enough, then you would have seen Red Skelton's T.V. show. He is a clown that I liked as a kid.

"It didn't help that there was that famous mass murderer guy who was also a clown...I forget his name."

That would be John Wayne Gacy.
