have you guys seen this? I only just noticed it on the Cutter Electronics website...

10th September 2007 - Cree, Inc. (Nasdaq: CREE), a leader in LED lighting components, today announced it has demonstrated light output of more than 1,000 lumens – an amount equivalent to the output level of a standard household light bulb – from a single R&D LED. Cree’s achievement demonstrates continued leadership in the development of LEDs that can make traditional light bulbs obsolete.

A single-die LED, driven at four amps, produced 1,050 lumens in cool white and 760 lumens in a warm-white version. Efficacy of the cool-white LED was 72 lumens per watt and 52 lumens per watt from the warm-white device. Both LED versions operated at substantially higher efficacy levels than those of today’s conventional light bulbs. Historically, Cree’s R&D demonstrations generally have been commercialized within 12 to 24 months.

I wonder how much more efficient (lumens/watt) it would be at lower wattage? I suspect it could get well above 100lm/watt..... oh yes, the future looks bright for DIY LEDs :D

I think there was a thread on this a while back... Doesn't matter though, that's one hell of a nice LED. Hopefully they are pretty cheap when they come out. Can you imagine a bank of 3 or 4 of those on the front of the bike? :D

Indeed, Cree has a subsequent press release announcing 129 lumens/watt at 350 mA:

I just upgraded my DIY dynamo headlight to a Cree P4 at 120 lumen. This replaced a 1-watt 49 lumen Luxeon LED in a Luxeon holder and lens. I also no longer needed to regulate the voltage and current supplied by my dynamo. The Luxeon LED could only be driven at 350mA. The new Cree LED is happy with 500mA from the dynamo. My upgraded LED headlight is now brighter than a friends night rider 5-watt halogen light with rechargeable batteries.

Shiny! (literally)

We'll finally start seeing these in car headlights, too...
