Alt Bike Culture - ZooBomb MiniBike Winter Feb 14-18!

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

I think I might actually make it out for this! I may have to work while I'm there, at least for a few hours so I can talk the wife into letting me go, but I've got nothing else going on!
awwww yeah, got my plane tickets. PDX, I'll be in you soon!

Sounds like quite the extravanganza :) .
We really will need photos.
I expect there to be stiff competition between kemmer and Capn iFUN! :D .
East Hill
kemmer - you really should log on to the ZooBomb website and talk some sh*t about how y'all are gonna kick some ZooBomb ass during MBW. All the Canadians do it. We love it when out of towners talk smack to us about their mad ZooBombing skilz!
;)
:D
:)
haha, I never got around to it, but I'll let my bombing do the talking. I only wish I could bring my mini, then you guys would be in serious trouble. I am bringing a bike with 16" wheels but it's a folder. :D

I think randya and donnamb would tell you that that is indeed the case.

Well, off I go to the first event. It's right in my neighborhood. :)
are you a pirate or a ninja?

I was part of the audience (along with Mrs. tfahrner) and the donator of the air horn use. Kemmer, however, was a ninja. The ninjas won. :D

Serious inquiring minds need to see :p .

I corked a corner for the races last night. I saw some serious skate action (30 skaters entered), and all three 12" bikes running hard neck and neck. The gravity bikes are a special treat. a few skaters and a few folks on the family bomb crashed, including myself at the end of the evening, I tacoed a wheel but luckily found someone to give me a ride home. I think we had over 200 people. Scott successfully defended his badass title and Billy won the skate race.
I was out again today at the chariot event.
I'm letting someone else take pictures, Jonathan Maus of BikePortland was there today, so the chariot events should be well documented.

woo hoo! Another successful minibike winter! Tony Pereira won the freak bike class race last night and Vancouver's Lyledriver took home the TourdeBomb trophy in the regulation 16" ZooBomb class race. I didn't hear who won the open class race. BF's own Kemmer took home a first prize medal in the foot down derby and represented SLC in the CupCake Challenge at the Olympics. a good time was had by all! The party was still going on at Legohouse when I left at about 12:30 AM last night.

Thank you so much for filming, Dan. (I was the woman with the air horn at the Capture the Flag on Friday.) I had been fighting off a cold/bronchitis since before NAHBS. Being part of the adoring audience on Friday and Zoobombing that night really set it off. :( Ah, well, at least I got to meet Kemmer. :)
I enjoyed Jonathan's slideshow :) .

that slide show is from last year. it doesn't look like this Jonathan's posted this year's yet, he's probably still editing, I saw him do a lot of shooting.

I will admit that I tend to avoid alt.bike events because while my mindset is alt, my bike screams "middle aged roadie" Hey I like my bike, I like that it can roll for miles and miles.. I guess I could take my Jamis hybrid too events but It really isnt as comfortable I usualy save it for the park or the store.
Funny thing is that I am not a roadie- I dont wear spandex (or a helmet !gasp!). I still think of myself as a "around town" biker (sorry "cyclist") its just that my perception of "town" has changed.
I guess I will keep biking solo.
^^ too bad, 'cause you're missing out on an awful lot of fun, and it really doesn't matter what kind of bike you ride.

Depends on my mood. Sometimes I don't mind being snubbed because I am "not cool enough", sometimes it iritates me. Being inbetween cultures can be that way- I don't belong to a bike tribe, but I am a bit of a loner anyway. I am planning on doing a MMR as soon as I have the next day off.

Wouldn't stop me, and I fit that description perfectly! Next time I'm down there I'm GOING to ride a tallbike, not just sit on one :D .

Try showing up at an alt bike thing with a carbon fork...
Its all good- I just think its funny that cyclists can be as cliquish as any other group. I fall between alot of cracks- I don't wear spandex, but I can haul with the roadies, I use flats (he woman who sold me teh Cannondale 8 was honestly shocked "you want what kind of pedals?" "you know flats, I dont like to have to gear up to ride, and I like to part ways with the bike in an accident") I don't wear a helmet (that one ended a date "I can't date someone who won't wear a helmet" really...)
I often wish I could find a group to ride with, because as much as I love riding alone sometimes it would be nice to have a group to go with. I have gone to a few rides (some alt some roadie) and never felt at home.
Maybe Ill bring my EMT gear on the MMR.. you never know when you will need a trauma kit.
if the ZooBombers are too 'alt' for you, try starting with a Shift ride

I will check out Shift.com, and I will keep riding... have no worries.

Yeah, it's hard finding a good group of people, seriously.
But the folks in Portland are pretty friendly. If they let me do this:

It's true! There are obnoxious jerks in every crowd, but overall I have made more top-notch friends in the bicycling community here (alt or not - there's a lot of overlap) than anywhere else I've lived.
