does your helmet protect your cheeks?
Yes, actually it does. With a helmet worn correctly, the cheeks would be less impacted. Same with the eye. If David had face planted, then no, a helmet would not not helped his face, but it would have his skull. From what Dave reported, however, he took the impact sideways. A helmet would have had been beneficial. Something you might want to think about, Tyler. Or not...it's your head.

i saw ME's fall and it was cheek side down and ive no doubt the helmet helped. no helmet in her fall wouldve meant ambulances and long hospital stays....im not gonna say helmets are the be all end all lifesaving device for cyclist, but as ive hit my head both with and without a helmet.....i think ill keep wearing one, it took a week for the headaches to go away and it was a "light" impact.....just a kiss!

"Triangle Square" = "Triangle Square 8" near Newport Coast? I haven't been in the area for a long time.
Newport Blvd and 19th Street, 405 to the 55 west. the first stoplight you hit it 19th and it will be on the right.

Helmet - Check
Body Armor - Check
Stool Softener - oh, crappp.
were you drinking?
i had a few beers in me, yes. i may have had a slight buzz, but i wasn't drunk.
But seriously, no damage to the eye or vision, I hope?
well, there are bone fragments that are poking my eye and my orbital floor is fckd up, but the doctor says after the surgery everything should get back to normal.
3. Do you have health insurance?
nope =\ i will probably have to finance it and make payments. just the surgery (surgeon + O.R. + anesthesia) will cost around $7500.. MSI should do a lot to cover ER costs and prescriptions, etc.

dave, do you think you'll be making any changes in your riding habits as a result of this accident?

i might start wearing a helmet and not drinking as much. i can't wait to get back on my bike though.

You obviously love to ride... hope it's soon!
i was actually riding today at the benefit ride, practicing reverse circles in the parking lot. my girlfriend was giving me stern looks and shaking her head.
so we raised a total of about $950 at the benefit ride yesterday. there were about 40 riders on the ride and more than 50 people at rooster cafe, the end point. we sold t shirts and raffled off a ton of stuff, bike related and not, it was great fun. the 900 is just from the people who came yesterday, not all the people who have donated to me through paypal and what not. good times had by all, i'll post up some photos here after my friends who shot them post them elsewhere.

thanks, dude. we daves gotta stick together!
Dave is not a kid?
i don't know, but he seemed a little more grown up than everyone else. he could be 19 for all i know.
here's how i was looking on saturday, one week after the crash. everyone was wondering why they were donating money to me because i look fine... it's everything under the skin that is broken. you can kinda see how flat my right cheek is...

How is the eye?
my eye is fine. i went to my opthalmologist and he gave me the whole nine yards and said it is totally fine. i popped a blood vessel in it which is why it's all bloody. apparently that sht takes up to 6 months to completely go away, which sucks. it's like a bruise, it just absorbs into the body. i do have a bone fragment poking the muscle in my eye that controls left to right movement, so it hurts to look left or right. i just turn my whole head if i have to look a certain way.

Did he get a spoke card? If so why didn't he use it during the Pie Ride?

I got one; but with my recent luck at loosing rear blinkies, I'm a little worried the card will jam the chain/rd. :p

my surgery was this morning and it went great. my eye is pretty sore/achey and i can kinda feel the incision under my eyelid, but the doc said a lot of the pain and discomfort will go away tomorrow and be gone on thursday. i slept all day until around 8 so i'm kind of awake now, i'll be taking it easy for the next week.

Heal up Dave, someone has to drink that Sparks garbage.
Congrats! Glad everything went well...hope you'rea 100% and on a bike soon.
thanks buck. this happened on 2/2, my surgery was on 2/12, i predict i will be back riding my bike by saturday 2/23, depending on how my face feels.
Ya, that's quite the shiner but I'm sure you'll be good in no time. Besides, your diligence for cycling will probably play a huge role in the rapidity of your recovery. Cycle safely.

Atta guy. Lookin' better already, dave.
And a tip of the hat to your friends for putting that benefit ride together so quickly, and with such great results. They pulled that off in, what, a matter of days? With t-shirts and spoke cards and everything. I'm guessing a lot of the folks who showed up aren't rolling in the dough quite yet (starving students, etc.) so their donations were extra-generous. Looked like a very nice ride to boot.
yea the ride was exactly a week after my accident. they got that sht hooked up quick.
