Commuting - Footwear

Just happened upon this model; it looks ideal for wet winter commuting, anyone using it?
Are they spd or waterproof-sole variety?

I know that as bike commuters, we're supposed to ignore questions of style and focus on functionality, but seriously! Regular bike shoes just make me look dumb. These shoes will make me look like a dumb cop!

I bought the lake winter boots a week ago and love them! I use SPD cleats for commuting.

Not cheap, but I think they were well worth the money. Wish I had the $ to buy them about a month or two ago.

I wear shimano sandals, wool socks, and booties over top. In pouring rain i wear a goretex sock over the wool socks. Best part about sandals in pouring rain, is they are dry in 10 min after arriving at work. I wear the above in all winter long commutes in the pacific northwest, 30-40 degrees and rain all winter.

I just read the Sheldon Brown article and there was mention of riding in Teva sandals, which got me thinking about looking into Keen's bike model for the warmer weather.

I can imagine that cops wouldn't want to click into their pedals. Needing to jump off in an instant can make the difference between living and getting a bullet in the chest.

If a person can't get off their bike in an instant with SPD pedals, that person shouldn't own SPD pedals

Bates footwear is merely OK in my experience (combat boots and uniform shoes).

Since this is the commuting section of the forum, I'll recommend my setup, which is good old MKS touring pedals and whatever shoe or boot I choose to wear. No retention system, no hassles. And not for everyone.

If a person can't get off their bike in an instant with SPD pedals, that person shouldn't own SPD pedals Your right! Thats why so many cops don't use them. Remember, they also run.

:rolleyes: I'm not a mountainbiker, a cross-racer, a cop, or a superman with x-ray vision, but pressure changes any situation. If you think having a gun pointed at you (or any of the other zany crap that cops come across) wouldn't affect ones reflexes, fine. I'm not so sure I wouldn't forget how to stand and hold my bladder simultaneously if someone pointed a gun at me.

Maybe I've just been riding with SPDs for far too long, but I've been in some pretty sketchball situations (i.e. cliff edges, scree runouts, and other impending doom) and never had a problem. I started on 'em in '94 and it's just second nature to me. I honestly don't think about it at all anymore....when I want off my bike I'm just off!

I don't think I'd have a problem with a gun pointed at me getting unclipped...you may think otherwise, and if you do you're welcome to come give me a real life test. I might piss myself, but I'll get out of my pedals.
