Track Cycling: Velodrome Racing and Training Area - Kenosha Velodrome, Wisconsin

Just curious if anyone in the area has ridden in the Kenosha Velodrome? Supposedly, according to their website, it is the oldest operating velodrome in the country, and is outdoor. I have not been their personally, but live in Milwaukee, and have been riding fixed gear on the streets for a couple years.

Basically, I'm wondering if their Monday night rides from June through August would be a good opportunity for a beginner interested in riding on the track. I'm also interested in basics on how challenging the racing seasons (The ones beginning in May) are. Any information would be appreciated.

If I remember right, they don't have track bike races on Mondays - just 'stock bike'= road bike where you are not allowed to shift. Best part is that it costs $2 - worst part is that it takes forever to get to the adult racing.

Tues night Cat4 (ABR doesn't have Cat5) would be a good place to start.

If you're old enough, check out the Wed night Master's racing (USCF). Mostly TT type (traditional track) with one mass start per night.

Another 45 min further south is the Northbrook velodrome (USCF). Friday night has Cat4/5 track bike racing (along with the stock bike racing). Mon & Tues night they have excellent clinics. You can learn more in one clinic than a season of racing. Thurs night is the main night, but you need to upgrade to a Cat4 first.

If you live in MKE you should definitely take a trip to Kenosha. It's a really fun track, and is a little more exciting than Northbrook (steeper banks, tighter turns, shorter track). Plus, there is a really great atmosphere up there. I wish I'd raced more there last season, but it is a bit of a drive from Chicago. TurboTurtle is right, Tuesday night races are the place to start racing, but if you want a more gentle introduction to the track the Northbrook clinics are a good idea.

Whats the 200m times like there? Compare it to a 11.0 in T-Town.

A good run would be 11.8 there. At the sprint competitions, the 200m times hover around 12.0
