Not doing it. As I began serious cycling again recently, as well as beginning a new job, I cannot take that much time off.

It does seem like a great course and I wish all the RTR riders the best. Maybe I will see some at the Copper Traingle?

I did it last year and it was a blast. I don't think it's in the cards this year. Sounds like a fun course though.

My wife and I did a bit of the RTR in 1999, with each of us sagging the other.

We started in Durango, went to Cortez - a pretty nice and relatively easy ride.

From Cortez, we went up the Dolores River where there there was a homemade pie and ice cream stand - sold out REAL fast. A group of local housewives raising money for a local charity.

The town of Rico was a real nice stop for a bit.

After Rico, going into Telluride, it started hailing and snowing over Lizard Head Pass and they had to sag 100's of folks into Telluride. There were some injuries, and they sent the ambulance out, also.

As we had not been able to get reservaations in Telluride, we drove over to Ridgeway, where we spent the night.

The next morning, my wife wanted to ride a bit with me into Montrose, so I drove 10 miles down the road and rode back to Ridgeway. However, the road has absolutely NO shoulder, and lots of big trucks, so she lasted only a mile before giving up.

So, I rode down to the car, drove back, and she drove into Montrose while I rode the bike wiht a few extra miles.

We then rode upto Gunnison, me riding most of the time, changing with her every so often.

At Gunnison, we decided we didn't want to try Monarch Pass, so we went up to Crested Butte and spent a couple of days riding around Crested Butte, and then went home.

My wife was 62 and I was 60 at that time.

The year before I did the RTR by myself on a mountain bike!

Any input on the road from Crested Butte to Buena Vista? Is it really not paved? Do we hike up that pass?

It's really not paved on the uphill side, and I've heard it's really just fine. Pavement starts right at the very top of the pass. I rode up and back from BV once, and seeing the dirt part at the top made me wish I was logistically able to keep going. It looked totally ridable. Probably would suck if it was raining, though.

I'll join the "I'm not doing it" posters on this thread (sorry jorpe, I know it's a dumb thing to do), and my excuse is, I'm doing BTC and I don't think I can ride day one of BTC without a rest day after RTR. Too bad though, I really wish I could. Looks like an excellent route this year.

Paved from the top to BV. Hard pack dirt from the turnoff outside of the road from Almont to the top.

Several previous RTR's have done this just fine.

Can you do it with regular skinny tires, or would you recommend switching to slightly wider tires that day?

You should be fine with your regular tires. I have ridden my road bike in places here in Colorado that many would freak out about. :) Your okay, they wouldn't pick a course that wasn't rideable on a road bike :)

got my confirmation late last night! Ready to rock!

We're in too. So, really, the road out of Crested Butte isn't a problem on regular tires and carbon bikes? I'm wondering if titanium might not be a better choice this year.
