News & Announcements - One star, two stars, red stars, blue stars

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.
Ok folks, we need your help. I'll explain the what now, and the why later.
We need another option besides the blue and red stars. This new icon will not give you superpowers, or even make the ads disappear. (Although if you have a red star, and get the new icon, you won't see ads) So before I go into detail on how to get the new icon, I need your assistance in finding one.
The only requirements are that it be as small as the current stars, and that bike-related is a big plus. If anyone can provide a very small version of the eagle on Sheldon Brown's helmet, that would be a winner.
Show us what you've got!

I really wanted superpowers... like the ability to teleport.

I would have thought healing powers would top your list. Now come up with a suitable contribution please. :D

Yes... healing powers would be good too.
I probably have the time to come up with something suitable.
Gary, can we make that smaller - about the size of the star next to your name?

What about a tiny pic of Ike Turner?

A freewheel! That could work too. Deeper meaning there too.

That's no freewheel, Cobber, that's a Fixie COg! ;)

I don't think it would be possible to get Sheldon's eagle small enough to remain recognisable, but a freewheel would work.
Or a chainwheel, such as the one on the BF t-shirt might do too.
Perhaps my favourite, the pink star?
But smaller, of course :) .

Damn straight it's a FG cog... thought that besides Igor that this would be very symbolic of Sheldon's passion for bikes.

I like the way you think...
I have a pink ribbon with my mum's name on it. But it's not on my car, it's on my arm.

Eagle.
East Hill
Ok, I figured it would be the eagle as soon as I mentioned it. Here's the plan:
The eagle will be available to any member that makes a donation in the name of Sheldon to the charity of his choice (or their choice). There is a bit of programming to do, and some logistics to work out, as I haven't figured out how to validate the donations, since they will go direct to the charity. But if someone wants to show how much Sheldon meant to them, they can make a donation, and we will give them an eagle. By using an image associated with Sheldon, his legacy will live on here on the forums.
Questions?

Questions?
Will the Eagle replace the red or Blue star?

If you have a red star, you will retain all the goodness that comes with your $25 donation, but will have the option of displaying the eagle.
Blue stars will stay blue.
Dang! Let me see if it's possible to have two stars/icons.

Sounds like a Skynyrd song.
As far as the two icon question, you could just make the icon/image available for use in signatures, which would give you a lot more options in sizing as well.

So think blog-badge...something you could provide those deemed worthy to use in their sig, or even just make it appear in the signatures of those worthy folks...if they have one or not. Your propensity to give up so easily depresses me, Igor.
Too bad we can't use the pink star and donate a portion to the Breast Cancer Research or something like that.

BF wouldn't be able to accomodate all manner of different donations. Sounds like this is a one time tribute to Sheldon who was intimately associated with bikes and well known on this site.
I really like the coloured eagles idea: red eagle for red star and blue eagle for blue star. Surely donations to heart disease, MS and any other charity Sheldon had backed would give enough options to everyone on BF...heart disease in particular affects almost every family.
Oh I agree, but it was just a thought.

I may consider that in October. Depends on how easy it is to do, which we won't know until we do something in memory of Sheldon.

I think the Sheldon Brown memorial eagle would be the normal red.
I would be as close to the first to sign up for one as possible. Maybe I can rig it with the people in charge?

Just waiting for the usergroups to be built. If you insist, I will pull the trigger on yours first, when the time comes.

Just be a bit careful here on the charities that Sheldon might or might not have backed. If you look through Sheldon's site (and in fact do google searches on it) you will see no reference to a favoured charity, and in fact he takes a decent old broadside at the ones that run bike-a-thons because of the negative effect they have on the image of cycling. Just because he died of a heart attack and suffered a form of MS doesn't mean he wanted people to support those charities in his memory. I feel that if there are charities that Sheldon would have preferred, they lie in the arts and culture ( in fact, the one mention of a not-for-profit charity on his website is a theatre).

I think that Brian is looking to find a Sheldon Brown approved charity, such as one which involved children and bicycles.
By the way Brian, I should have said that Sheldon Brown deserves the first Igor, and I would be happy for second.

A Multiple Sclerosis charity would seem appropriate.

How about something to do with three speed, 10 speed, 14 speed, indexed? Well, need room for singles I guess.
