Mountain - Plains - Denver Sheldon Brown Memorial Ride

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

This Saturday at 2 PM, there will be a memorial ride in honor of Sheldon Brown starting at the bike racks outside the REI flagship store. One of the bikeforums users "bigwoo" got this idea started on Denver Craigslist a few days ago. From what I understand it will be a laid-back ride of 5-10 miles. I would expect a motley assortment of fixed gears, down tube shifters, and urban commuters since Sheldon appealed to about every cycling subculture.

I'll be there...
Well guys,
I just got a very cryptic e-mail from the organizer:
EDIT: We are going to be doing the ride on April Fool's Day. It has been decided that this was one of his favorite days and there will be organized rides with thousands of people all across the world in nearly every city
No other information, and I have no idea who "we" refers to. I was really looking forward to the ride, and I'm pretty disappointed that I found out today, after having already canceled some plans for Saturday to make time for the ride.

I'm still planning on showing up Sat. at 2:00 since I will be out riding anyway (50 degree forecast for Denver). I'm sure many of the people who had seen the organizer's CL post and my bikeforums post but did not e-mail the organizer will still show up since they will be unaware the ride has been rescheduled.

I'll be there Saturday as well... no reason we can't have two rides, right?
Sweet guys, that's awesome!
Now I'm all excited again :)
I think for all Sheldon did for the vintage cycling community, more than one ride is appropriate :)
How are the bike paths around REI now? I'd be interested in doing this if it's not too slippery out.

I'll see you guys @ 2:00 tomorrow. I'll be riding a red '81 Pinarello with white bar tape and saddle. I'm think the trails will probably be fine, just a few patches of ice around the bridges.
Jay
if it's really wet out, I might be on a rusty brown Raleigh with white bar tape and a rear fender..

ice under the bridges. Just went there tonight. Some of the ice is thick/slushy under the old green ironwork. Otherwise, good. Taking the studdeds off and throwing on the tours on the MTB. I obviously won't be rolling fast tomorrow...

Thanks to everyone who showed up this afternoon. Hopefully we can organize some more rides as the weather gets nicer.

Definitely had a great time! I really can't wait til the slush dries up though - it was pretty rough riding with clips on the way back home.
I'm always up for another ride - just hit me up at riomx at yahoo.com :)

I have a weird schedule but sometimes it works out...Let me know!
although, I did see a thread somewhere for a 'race' involving donuts with required rest stops and such. Might be fun just because its' rather absurd to race and huff donuts, too.
maybe thats just me...
I'm down for the donuts race. Do you have a link?
