Just about got my bike ready to use a fixie for the winter, only thing left is to get a wheel. Was supposed to be getting one of a friend but he had gave it a loan to someone and he had given it to some on...(you know the type of thing)

So my other option was to either buy a fixed wheel or just buy a hub and use one of the existing rims I have at home.Ive got 2 rims of wheels that I dont really use anymore. They are in both good condition. One is a CXP33 (32 hole) and the other is a OpenPro (36 hole) and think ive got some old mavic 32 hole somewhere as well.

My thought was just to use one of the rims I have and just get a rim mail order (as its well cheaper than LBS) and get local wheel builder to build it up for me.Not wanting to spend a fortune on a hub, so the top Miche are out of the question but still want a strong reliable hub.Any suggestions?

Surly hubs are a good value, a little on the heavy side, but that doesn't bother me. Make sure whatever hub you get matches the spacing on the frame or can be respaced to fit the frame. I respaced the Surly with no problem and I've done the same with a Sovos, but I stripped the cog threads on the Sovos while skid stopping, so I don't recommend that one.

One thing, most wheel builders don't like to build with used rims, so I'd check w/ them first before going that route.

A decent hub for the money is the Suzue pro max (disco) hub.

You can get one delivered for less than $60(US) from HERE (http://www.big-wheel.com/v2/bwstore/product.phtml?p=4259) . Don't forget to get a lockring, chain and cog. Do a search for "Track" at this site and you get some fun stuff.

I would go to your local shop before you buy it and ask them what it would cost to build up a rear fixed wheel. Use the rim you got, they are decent and will work fine.

Or you could just get a pre-built wheel by shopping around. Ebay always have some, but the quality on these is a dice roll.

It all comes down to how much you want to spend. This SITE (http://www.sheldonbrown.com/harris/fixed-hubs.html) will give you an idea of what type of hubs are available. Make sure you get the right spacing.
