Mountain Biking - what's my Haro Extreme X3 worth?

Hey guys, I bought my Extreme X3 back in January thinking I'll get into freeriding, but now I just want a lighter cross country racing bike, but would have to sell my X3. Everything is in perfect shape, and is actually better than new. Besides for the normal specs, it now has these parts below, most are almost new. I'll probably be disgusted at what I could get out of it, and will end up keeping it and getting an XC bike next year or the one after that, but I'm curious.


XTR chain, the 30% stronger version
XT front derailleur
XT rear derailleur
XT rear cassette
XT shifters
Atomic Labs rear hub
aluminum nipples on rear wheel
FireXC crankset (can also put Husslevelt back on)
includes separate extra firm kit for Psylo
T.H.E. front fender
Specialized Telluride seat
Specialized tubes
Specialized computer

currently has WTB 2.4" 560g tires, still have the original Maxxis ones

I was told by the lbs that generally bikes lose about 40-50% of their value after a year and about 10% per year after that. Upgraded parts do make a bit of a difference but not that much. If you've got lower than XT parts knocking around, stick them on and sell the XT bits separately.

You paid $900 for the bike originally right? (MSRP was $1100 if not mistaken) with all the upgrades you're probably in the $1,200 to $1,300 range out of pocket expense. I'm guessing you could probably stick all the stock stuff back on it, sell the upgraded stuff seperately and walk away with about $700-800.

Bike (stock configuration) probably $500-600, then XT stuff and new cranks will yield you anothe $100-150, maybe a little more.

If you're planning on getting a new XC bike, why not just buy a frame and swap over the components? You could probably get $200-300 for the frame alone, and buy a new one for $500, then you wouldn't take as big a hit! A 5" travel fork isn't too bad for XC unless you REALLY get into racing. The wheels may be a bit heavy, but maybe you can sell those seperately esp. with the Atom Lab rear hub.

Ok, here's the run-down.

MSRP is $1,300 on the bike in stock configuration.

So yeah I guess I'll just keep it before I take a $1,000+ hit on something that's better than it was new. I realize that everything loses value and that I can't count the full value of upgraded parts, but still, I'll just use it as a training bike and build up a really lightweight bike for racing that can't take half the abuse this one can.

ebay yourself a nice light frame, build it up, and you will still have the full squish frame if you ever want it. Save your pennies, build it a piece at a time, you could have both....
