Introductions - new rider near austin

Im relativley new to riding, currently living in san marcos. i commute to school and run errands on my aunt's old schwinn. (its red.) i think its some variant of the tour series bikes, but it really doesn't matter, it rides well. i try to ride on the weekends, and if i get to where i can ride 25 or more miles i might consider a more dedicated properly fitted bike, that is a good bit lighter. right now, im in the 10 mile range, then i need a break.

well, the bike is a le tour via the late 70s. the guy at the bike shop really took note of it, said he had a fixed gear on the same platform. managed about 20 miles today, might be getting a new bike sooner than planned...

its going to be a while before i can get a new bike, but im definitley open to suggestions in the sub-1000 range. being a college student, i won't have the money to get one until the end of the summer, but i really do like the bianchi via nirone 7, and i have heard good things about koni and scott, KHS per the local bike shop, and my uncle rides a giant. i know im looking in the range where you have to make a sacrifice between the frame and componentry, but we will see. im also considering building my own by piecing together deals i find. Id really like 700c wheels, and at least mid-grade components. time will see, and i want to get a properly fitted for a bike, instead of making something fit. im partial to a lightweight classic design though, but id go for something newer if i could afford it.

i guess i really didn't mean classic, as i already have that kind of bike. i will be keeping my schwinn as a commuter, and the new bike will be mostly for longer weekend rides where im trying to cover a lot more ground. again, open to any suggestions. I don't mind used, and im pretty sure i need a frame in the 56-58cm range. found a nice one in austin, but money is too tight right now...

already been looking through there, and i considered the raleigh aluminum frame, the giant ocr 3, and the motobecane miarage pro. there was an 01 khs flite 300, but id rather one of the others. i just can't afford it now.

Understood, and been there. :D By the way, a great hill to ride down is over on Jester.....not a lot of fun to ride up though :eek:

after looking at bikes this past weekend, and seeing that the bikes i like (in the $500 range) are in the low 20 lb range. I took my le tour and put it on my bathroom scale while holding it, and found it to weigh in at 26.8 lbs. not too bad at all, so i think i will hold off until i can afford a bike in the sub 20lb range. i think losing 5-10 lbs myself would make a bigger difference then getting a lighter bike.

And cheaper too!

Your LeTour should do you just fine for a while.
