Bicycle Mechanics - rim weight

does anyone have the rim weights for varius machine built wheels like Mavic Kysriums and Bontranger Race-Lites and such?

you can probably find those by looking at the various companies' websites, or at an online retailer like colorado cyclist (http://coloradocyclist.com).

i've looked and most don't :( anyone?

You might be able to get via an e-mail to the companies. But, as they do not sell these rims separately from the built wheels (that I am aware of) you will most likely not find elsewhere. Good luck.

it doesn't say how much the weight of the rim by itself is because i don't think they sell the rims separately. colorado cyclist doesn't sell the bontragers.

but on the bontrager website (http://www.bontrager.com/roadwheels/detail.asp?id=117&pt=10), they have a handy little chart that lists the weights of their wheels. it's the third column from the left. that page is for the carbon race lites. here (http://www.bontrager.com/roadwheels/detail.asp?id=123&pt=10) is the page for the normal race lites. same deal. i don't think they sell the rims separately, so the weights are for the whole wheel.

I know alot of the weight in wheels like Ksyrium is in the rims, so they don't advertise the rim weight for that reason.

the ksyriums are still lighter than the regular racelites though. by about 60grams for the rear. a lot of the weight of the ksyriums probably also comes from the hubs too...

a rim has to have SOME weight to it, and it IS the largest part of a wheel...but they are still one of the best stock wheelsets out there, it seems like worrying about the rim weight is a bit silly.

I concur. An ounce of weight on the tyre or rim slows your acceleration as much as two ounces on the frame or axle. The only benefit of aero wheels is reduced air resistance, which is undeniably more important than weight in fast, steady-speed racing and time-trialing. The typical nonracing cyclist is far better off with the lightness, economy, repairability, and reliability of conventional 32-spoke wheels.

I THINK the Ksyriums, with shaved rims, are about 450 each. Can't remember where I saw that, but I DO remember that they were noticeably heavier than Open Pros (435?) and Velocity Aeroheads (405). I built a pair of Velocity Aerohead race wheels and they were really sweet--rim is a bit flexier than the Open Pros though...Tying and soldering them was a dream come true. Jobst Brandt is off his rocker when he says you don't have to do that anymore. Couldn't be further from the truth. There's a lot of reasons to race standard wheels and rim weight is just one. Ok, fine, so total weight is another, easily found replacement spokes are another, stiffness, customizing to your weight/needs, etc etc all are better with standard wheels.
